^^^i shoot primarily with a nikon D3 but also have a nikon d300 as both my back up and a crop body. as i was saying before, its kind of a subjective thing because while one person may do mainly portraiture, another might do landscapes and such, so the two people would probably have vastly different gear, and if those two people were made to choose one lens, im sure they would be polar opposites. personally i have this gear, for this situation.......

nikon d3 - full frame, amazing low light capabilities
nikon d300 - crop frame for reaching further on longer lenses, great back up
nikon 14-24 2.8 - landscape, star trails ect.
nikon 70-200 2.8 - longer reach for wildlife, amazing portrait lens
nikon 1.7 teleconverter - for use with the d300 body and 70-200 for max reach
nikon 24-70 2.8 - best all around lens for everything from my daughter to cars, landscapes, and everything in between
nikon 105 2.8 - one of the best macro lenses of all time, i did a lot of macro stuff at one time
nikon 50 1.8 - got it cheap, thought it would be a good lens for use with my daughter and does ok

i pretty happy with my kit. i dont think i will be buying any more glass any time soon, i pretty much got what i wanted the first time, over the past few years. i learned very early on, the value of buying the right lens the first time rather than ****ty second market glass. not that second market glass such as tamaron, sigma, ect. dont have good stuff, id just rather pay more for the nikon glass and i have never regretted it. if i were to do anything glass wise in the near future, it might be to upgrade my 70-200 v1 to the v2, its an exceptional piece of glass. and perhaps the 50 1.4. sorry for the long winded response, but after all, this is the photography thread though right!

I have the 29" apple display, it's great! I would look for one that can be professionally calibrated. As I'm sure you know display colors are very rarely the same as print colors even when calibrated.

and yeah, im keenly aware that what is most important is to make sure that my profile and that of my printer is correct. i spent a whole weekend at their studio making sure my prints that i make and sell, were as close to my color profile as possible. so i went that route. but i simply cannot edit my stuff right now because im getting vastly different exposure, color, and contrast from one monitor to another. this is why i want to go dedicated and this way i know that its correct on my end. thats really all i can do. thanks for the recommendation but i really cannot justify spending nearly a grand on a monitor. i also was not aware they made a 29" monitor.

I intentionally use 2 vastly different monitors in sync next to one another. One to mimic the strong contrast, deep gamma viewing and another superflat low profile which I use for my waveforms/color scopes, and to give myself a really good look at what point I start actually crushing blacks when I move the image over as opposed to the high contrast displays which appear to clip blacks visually sooner than 255 in an 8 bit setting.

You do have a monitor calibration tool, right? Just making sure.

I work in the marketing department at Team Toyota; the majority of my work consists of photo editing and graphic work in Photoshop and Illustrator. So, monitor quality is rather important to me.

sorry i took so long to respond to this. i had logged on the day you posted this to respond. then got pulled away to do something and forgot.

for the beemer shots nothing crazy. just two SB600 speedlights and my on cam flash. Setup for specific fill where i wanted the light. nikons CLS is fun to play with sometimes. i have a bunch of other lighting. but most times i dont even use it, lol. i just pull out the speedlights for quicker setup and adjust accordingly.

yeah, i was user a spyder 3 express but for some reason the eye seemed to take a **** and was calibrating my monitor a greenish tint. this was also happening to my buddy who also used the calibrator, so i know its not just my display. so i went out to my buddies print studio and borrowed his xrite i1 pro calibrator which is top of the line and that is where im at.
team toyota huh...if you are ever interested in shooting an MKIV i might bring mine for a lil shoot. i have had my car for nearly a decade and oddly enough i take no photos of it. well, thats not entirely true, all of the mods and engine work that i do i take pics of!

How much do you plan to spend on a "high quality/professional" monitor?
Professional photographer looking for best possible monitor for precise photo editing

Have you heard about the Asus ProArt 24" Monitor

I used to use an Xrite EyeOne when was at PSU; been a while since I've calibrated my monitor last, though. I ended up manually calibrating my work computer using the Apple calibration tool and a few different calibration images. I got it pretty damn close.

When the weather warms up a bit, we'll have to get together and shoot.

grimm, im trying to spend no more than 500, and even that is a stretch for me. im fully aware of the irony in the fact that i have spent more than 15 grand on my camera equipment and now im bitching about spending a grand on a good monitor. its a no brainer. but in all that i have been reading, for half the money, i can get a good monitor that wont break the bank but will still do what i require. as for the asus, i have read a few reviews on it and it seems that the familiar complaint about it is the corner bleeding. i have learned to take reviews online with a grain of salt, but when it seems that a similar complaint is noted in several places, its cause for concern. so far it seems that the dell ultrasharp monitors are leading the pack among 500 and under displays. it seems that there was a bad batch of them for years but there are revisions that are known to be good. there is also an asus that i am looking at but i cannot remember the model number off the top of my head. ill have a look at the article you posted. thanks for the info.

zillon, the i1 seems to be a pretty good unit. generally any gear i get from this guy is top notch, especially since has been a professional photographer who has shot all over the world since the 70s and is now an adviser for an industrial printing company that specializes in photo printers. the i1 kit he gave me also has a chart in it to calibrate printers as well but im not getting into that since i dont print anything myself. and yes, when the weather gets nicer, we shall shoot.

Correct. 17-55mm times 1.4 (Nikon crop sensor factor).

35mm F/2 is an option. Also the 28mm 2.8 both EF lenses so you could use them on a full frame as well.
