Hip-hop is pretty much rap.

If he wasn't meant for the masses, why is he trying to sell himself to record labels? Why is he being publicized? Asher Roth is basically another Eminem. Sure he doesn't look the same, or "rap" about the same topics, but at the end of the day, they are both "rappers" that are doing the same schtick.

We are comparing green apples to red apples.
Hip-hop is a genre. Hip-hop is not rap anyone who truly understands music and the differences in genres understand that hip hop and rap are two COMPLETElY different genre.

Hip-hop is the voice of the youth, the experienced, its for those who seek something more than money and fame. They are the ones who do it for the music and for the people that truly appreciate it. Like Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, Common, Pras, and etc. Rappers are those who want to emulate Tony Montana and the scarface mantra. Everyone is a gangster, has money, done dirt and still in the streets. Everyone has an alias and will kill for whatever reason. It is an imaginary world. They are those that do blur/skirt the lines between the two. Jay-Z does it often, nas too. But alot of people are to dumbed down to listen to the music and see the difference. Hell listen to the ****ing Cool by Lupe. Or his mixtapes. THAT IS HIP HOP. Now then listen to a ****ing Jim Jones album. THAT IS RAP.

your right. i mean i dont see anybody lasting off one song, thats why artists put out albums, like asher is goin to do on the 20th. and i love college is his grabber song . he like many other artist put out a song that will explode in the media right away to bring people in and to get his name out. its just the first single off "asleep in the bread isle" there will be a 2nd and 3rd. just like there is with every other artist. and you cant base someones style off one song

he doesn't I can tell you that much. My buddy has been friends with Asher for a couple years. And he's an all around chill dude. He's just another college kid.

Lupe Fiasco has some good stuff, if you go into the lyrics of it all, as does Common. I, as well as a good bit of my friends, can not take Asher seriously. Around here people seem to be ass raping the fact that he is from the area, giving him all this hype and to be honest it's all hype. I want to see him come up with something original from the ground up AND not sound like he is talking with someone elses beat in the back ground while sounding good.

you of all the people in this thread know that I have heard his other stuff, I love college is his one song that grabbed people like you said which is what I was reffering to, not just putting out one song in general. If thats the best he can do to grab people then he won't last long because that one isn't that good. Yeah, its awesome because we all get ****faced on the weekend and wake up next to a no name girl and bounce and we relate to that. Once people get over hearing that, theyre going to realize the quality of the music is on par with the toothless harmonica player on the corner of High and Market streets aiming for pennies.

Your definition of rap is too subjective. You claim some people are rappers because they talk about the streets and are all about the money n ho's. But guys like Nas are only sort of rappers because they talk about killin bitches but they aren't in it for the money.

I sort of see where you are coming from, but that doesn't really differentiate Asher Roth from Eminem. As I don't see Eminem being all about the ho's and bling.

Its like any other artist. And its his demographic. Plus the hype is because no one really makes it out of WC. Its a trap

I understand, and youre right on both parts lol. Like I said, I want to hear him put something good out that isn't a mixtape and is all him, because I don't see much out of him right now.

Im basing this on lyrical content. I've listened to asher roths mixtapes and ems. Asher DOES not take this **** seriously. Listen to the song "The day I got crowned". It shows that, Em on some songs hits valid points but at other times just rips someone to shreds. The more he put out the more he moved away from his roots. I can see an EARLY em bein like asher but not the em now. Too different in my eyes.

The mixtape scene is actually the best place to discover good music. Its cheap easy and efficient in getting in touch with TRUE artists. Mixtapes aren't just over someone else's beats. Alot of the time its original beats or mash ups. Hell check out Lupe's work with the Gorillaz
