This is why I bought an FD. THAT's a MANS Mazda. And it's has all the good attributes of the miata and none of the draw backs. Plus it's a hell of alot faster.

FCs, FDs, RX8s (underpowered but the chassis geometry works), MS3, and MS6s are the backbone of the mazda sport cars.

Drivetrain orientation? See: Evos and STis, MS6s are AWD too
Interior commodities? See: The M series, MS6s have less

chassis, handling, transmission, balance, steering feedback, braking, fun factor

everyone's definition of a sports car is different so there's no one correct answer. What makes an Austin Healey Sprite a sports car but an M100 Elan not a sports car? Simple - the M100 Elan's FF layout killed the handling and steering feedback. You have to drive some of the true sports cars to get an idea or the feeling of what it is like for the driver to be connected to the vehicle. People bash the RX7/RX8 but Mazda has always stuck to their roots; those vehicles define what a sports car should feel like - great brakes, superb handling, smooth transmission, strong chassis, etc

You missed the point completely. I'm saying that the miata IS a cheap economy car...it just doesn't have the attributes of one (other than the underpowered engine). What other economy cars are rwd with a front midship? The car is setup very similarly to an s2000.

I also never said anything about it being a "uber l33t sports car". It's just a great car for the price. Granted I would never be seen in one...

You are forgetting the little 4 door that kick started Mazda's US Mazdaspeed lineup...the Mazdaspeed Protege. Back in 03 it was the **** hands down.
