no, using filters on beer is gay :p

It wouldn't actually make it "smoother" thats all in the brew and extras used to the beer.

From what I understand, there really is no "beer filter". During fermentation and sitting for a few weeks the solids start to fall out of the liquid and gather on the bottom.

The way to get even more out is to transport the beer to a secondary fermentation tank, w/o including that solid stuff at the bottom, and let sit for another week or two to allow even more of the solids to drop out.

then its off to the bottle, where even more will fall out.

Wheat Beer goes from the first fermentation tank and into the bottle, so you still have a lot of the solids. That isn't wheat particles floating around in your wheat beer folks, that's yeast... and that's where a lot of the flavor comes from too.

But what do I know? Molson Canadian and Fosters (Australian beer right?) are the best beers out there. fo'rizzle

Lambic is a Belgian brewing style that uses fruit in the process. Most common are cherry, peach and raspberry. The fruit taste is really strong and the beer is sweet. My wife likes them when I drag her to Monks, as she isn't a huge beer fan. The peach one tastes just like a peach and is a good substitute for a "fruity" drink.

Warsteiner (the beer in redlines fridge) is pretty tasty and is very popular in Germany. It is hard to find here in the states though. I believe Moriarty's in CC had it on tap a little bit ago. The most common Weizsen in Germany is Franziskaner. Another beer that is pretty good, but can be hard to find here.

Redline, you need to try to get yourself up to the Cologne area and pick up some Fruh Kolsch. It is seriously the best beer I have ever had. It's name means "local" Kolsch and can only be found around Cologne and Aachen.

Another great beer that will put you on your rear is Scaldis. The best way i could describe it is a light brandy. It's similar to a Sam Adam's Utopius, but not as punchy or expensive. Monk's and the Abbey in CC regularly stock it.

As for the ultra hoppy beers, they just aren't for me, way to bitter. It seems like every micro brewer in the US is trying to make the hoppiest beer on Earth.

Franziskaner is really easy to find anymore, its just in the bottles and you have to ask for it. Warsteiner is good.

I can deal with hoppy beers, though they're not my favorite.

As far as fruit in beers, those are a bitch to make... they need to ferment for something like 6 months in order to take on the flavors of the fruit.

I want to make an apple cinnamon weisse as my next wheat beer though, hopefully I can get away with something to get that apple flavor other than sticking an apple in the fermenter and waiting months upon months...

I've seen Franziskaner and Warsteiner at Canal's in Jersey, but they just don't taste the same out of the bottles. However, they are exceedingly good on tap, but are difficult to find.

yes, on tap they are damn near impossible to find...

I knew of one place in glenside, Union Jacks, that had it on tap for awhile.

Everything is better on tap...

If I had my own place I'd be getting my beer instead of bottling. It cuts out the carbonation step required to get a bottle carbonated. You place a little bit of "priming sugar" in the bottling bucket that mixes in with the batch. The remaining yeast feed on it and create the carbonation... requires another two weeks.

With kegging and a home tap system you just need the co2...

eh...

about the only thing not watered down on that list is guiness. I really like Guiness b/c its so smooth and the flavor is awesome. I never understood how people can say its a heavy beer when it really isn't. I've put down 5-6 of them easily w/o feeling full.

I prefer guiness extra stout though. Can never find it :-/

I looked around but the distributor i went to had about as much diversity as the holocaust. I ended up getting a case of Long trail Blackberry Wheat and some Honey Moon (summer brew of blue moon). Letting them get cold now. Anyone have the blackberry wheat? It sounded tempting.

For any of the interested boys and girls in the audience this is the same thing for wine. It is never filtered you just keep changing the fermentor and the solids stay behind.

NJGoat is pretty close with what the Lambic is. The only thing you forgot is that it's not made like a normal beer. After the fruit is added the room where the tanks are have vents that are opened and wild yeast is allowed to blow in on the breaze off the mountains and across the open tanks. When that happens the beer spontaneously ferments. That's what makes it so much more exspensive then other beers (around me the cheapest I have found is 8 a bottle 95 for a case).
