I was in the same thing 4 weeks ago, which nikon (because canons feel like plastic). I was looking at a D40, D60, D50, D70, or a D80. You gotta look at the lens limitations on the D40, D40X, and th D60 which made me say no to them. I looked at reviews between the 50, 70 and 80. As they move up, features improve the d80 being the least noisy. I thought the d80 was alot of money but as some said on here, look at nikonians, there are many d50, d70, and d80. a d50 on there starts for about 300. a d70 starts about 400, and a d80 starts about 600 and all of these usually include great extras! I found great deal on barely used d80 for cheap! so i got a great camera and let me tell you i have no been let down. Its a great camera to get if you know a thing or two and are looking to improve your skills, that camera will last you for years! That site is def the best for buying nikon stuff. But before you buy anything go to a store and hold the cameras because i held a d40 and it feels like a tiny thing in my hands and the 80 feels perfect, that will be the greatest factor because when you are shooting all day the size is what keeps you comfortable!
Good luck with your purchase

20D or 30D would make an awesome first DSLR. Nothing wrong with a 350/400D as well. Its all about budget and what you plan on doing with it. Id lean towards the 30D

I found an XT for 479 with a 18-55 canon lens, and an XTi with the same lens for 699..i dont think the features are different enough between the 2 to give that price difference, I might go with the XT
