Well the pump sends bubbles (obviously) to the surface of the water, thus making the surface of the water move, thus preventing stagnant areas of the water.. the bubbles bring up the water with more carbon dioxide and less oxygen to the surface, and the circulation brings the oxygenated water from the surface to the rest of the tank.. but a powerful filter will do the same thing. It certainly doesn't hurt having an air pump though, even if not necessary.

This reminds me of my brothers old baseball coach, he had a U shaped tank in his basement, it spanned like 20 feet total. Custom built into the wall and i BELIEVE it was saltwater, cause he had some crazy looking fish in it. Something like 2500 gallons or some ish, I was always in shock when I was over there cause there was always another fish I didnt discover lol. All other tanks of slackin' jk

I kind of want one now, but I'm sure I'll be bored of it.

It's a good backup. If you have larger fish and you lose circulation they can die within 12 hours. The air pump will help keep them alive if your filter stops, which if you have a larger canister filter can happen for a variety of reasons.
