John, in your area, Bonehead Performance should be the obvious choice.

they rebuild engines??

O so i got around to taking the valve cover off today, and the cams are pretty bad looking. alot of chips and worn down parts. my timing is off, by a lot, so that would be the reason for this whole ordeal. So any dsm guru's who have internal experiance, want to come and take a look at the damage and tell me what you think?

Proof that you DO NOT buy anything from ghetto people. Don't deal with them.

Good luck getting the car fixed. I don't know tons about DSM's, but I've never heard of an oil filter blowing off when a car hits boost. Especially on the rock solid 1g's...

Like you said before, go burn his house down. haha.

haha, nice... actually he seemed really cool while i was talking to him on aim, for almost a month, and he was real cool in person, but once the sale went down, he dissapeared. i would love to burn his house down, but i would go to jail for a long time .... so instead i will ruin his life.

Hey bud, take some pics. I'm sure there will be plenty of people willing to tell you what happened.

And actually, the oil filter backing off is very common in DSMs. Only 90 models were immune to this. Still any motor that has balance shafts removed, stiff motor mounts, and lumpy cams will have a problem with bolts and things loosening and backing off. I lost a motor, turbo combo this way as well.

An installed rebuilt motor goes for about $3k-$4k. All new bearings, rings, seals, gaskets, oil pump, water pump, timing belt, rebuilt head, honed cylinders, engine assembly and installation. A completle running motor goes for $500-$1200. Good cores go for about $150-$300. Most used parts prices are seasonally affected considering the big time DSMrs have no problems blowing things up during race season, lol.

Considering a stock motor can handle 25psi and a 90-92 motor with just ARP head studs can hold up to 550 whp a lot of people have no problems going with just a junk yard motor. Biggest concern with older motors is hydraulic lash adjusters tend to make noise after 50k miles. This problem was adressed with several design changes in 2nd and 3rd gen models. Valves seals also tend to leak after 100k mile. And balance shaft bearings are a liability in the 150k mile range.

Really hard to see what is going on with just a pic through the oil cap. Anyway you can pull the valve cover to see what else is going on. Not sure what to make of it. I've never seen a cam go bad like that before, especially stock or HKS cams.

I highly suggest that once you get the head off you find out what is going on with your timing belt setup. It seems like something is out of alignment and the belt is out of wack and it eventually pulled the cam enough to start contacting the head. Who removed the balance shafts, because that would be the guy I'd be pointing my finger at?

Just do not bolt on a new/rebuilt head before you are 100% certain that the timing belt, gears, tensioner and guides are all set up perfectly.

Point the finga at the dude that sold me the car. and no, im not just going to put a new head on, it is at a shop right now, il know by tomarrow the full extent of the damage, i would rather play it safe and let someone else deal with it so i dont do something stupid, and little and destroy more stuff.

bah. do it yourself. a rebuild to stock wont be that much. BUT if you port and polish it,but a nice set of cams/springs/ and retainers in it youll be set. and that might cost 1500
