I want to do the same thing, but it wont be for at least a few years down the road. I've talked to my parents about this kind of stuff before.

my older cousin bought an old shop, meineke or pepboys and turned it into a house.

He spent about a year getting paperwork straight before he could move in, then spent another year or so renovating to make it livable. Heating is real expensive because the insulation in the building isnt up to a houses standards

Its real nice now though, he has an enclosed loft with glass windows as his bedroom that sits right above the garage. He turned one garage bay into a full bar..its sick, ill ask if he can send me pics some time

good luck with it but you better have way more cash than you expect it to cost.

I say go for it.
I didnt even think of that! Thanks a ton! My dad owns a catering company and was looking for storage anyway, I could write off all the expenses and then be the live in janitor & crew.

I called a realator today and Im waiting for a call back.

Ill keep you guys posted.

Njsurfgurl, I was thinking either Allentown, Philly burbs, or some hillbilly town up here near allentown which I doubt I would have any trouble with permits lol. Ill be in touch for sure. Thanks!

Please do ask him! Also, was he prohibited from working on it for that entire year? Because I plan to take a 27 month masters program in Fla. and I dont have a problem letting the house sit when my moms BF works on it. Theres no rush. I just wanted to get the ball rolling. Thanks!

Theres a old farm house down the street from me for sale. Its huge, 5bedrooms, 3baths, in-ground pool, two car garage+bigggggggggg Barn and its on over an acre of land Salisbury school district too. They are only asking 264k for it, its a steal. Not exactly a industrial building, but it is cheap.
