Cool thread indeed. When I am not shooting dog shows, I enjoy wildlife, especially birds. Here are a few:

The first was taken at the Viera wetlands in Florida, the second was taken along the Susquehanna river in Maryland, and the third shot was taken at Middle Creek wildlife area outsire of Reading PA.

So random question....I want to get a print made and going to try out mpix.com

My question is in what resolution do you think i should upload my file for an 8x10? i was thinking at least 500, converting from .psd to .jpeg to be able to upload to mpix.com

My 500 resolution .jpeg is like 163 megabytes idk if mpix.com will even let me upload a file that big?

or is walmart, walgreens, target the same quality?

163 MB is a huge file. I upload full resolution jpegs for all my prints, from 4x6 to 16x24. Most files are around 10MB. However, I have printed great looking 8x10s from files as small as 1MB. Just make sure you are uploading an image that is in sRGB format. It also helps if you have the printer profiles for the lab you will be using.

I don't know what you mean by 500 resolution?
Most places printers don't print higher resolution than 300dpi (300ppi).
what resolution was the photo shot in? how many pixels wide is the image? it's simple math to figure out what the largest size print you can make. On a side note i use ritzpix for prints.

Sorry im a complete newb when it comes to stuff like this....id adobe when i go to document size or canvas size it comes up...

5065x3357 pixels resulotion 500... its a .tif file so when i saved it as .jpeg it asked for what resolution i wanted to save it as and i put 500

there is also an option in adobe to save for web & device which is how i converted it from .tif to .jpeg but do you loose a lot of quality like that?

When i use file save for web @ device its the only way i can get it from .tif. to .jpeg and makes the file still 9.77mb which is still big IMO, what am i doing wrong here? Or what can i do so i can upload this picture and get a print made?

Sorry for all the questions

I never save over a 300ppi (ppi= pixels per inch)(dpi = dots per inch) as I mentioned before most commercial and home printers can't pack that many pixels in per inch.

With an image size of 5065x3357 at 300dpi you can print out approx 11"x17" without quality loss. But at 500dpi you'd only have a 6"x10" print.

pixels divided by pixels per inch = Inches. so... 5065/300 = 16.8"

at least thats how i go about it.

General rule of thumb is don't go below 150 dpi/ppi for prints. 300 is ideal.
I've made 20x30" prints from cropped D300 files that look wonderful at ~160dpi. So yeah, keep it as close to 300dpi, just don't overdo it. This would probably be different if they were going in a high-end gallery but if that becomes the case you'll have it all figured out on your own.
