So I was out late Saturday night trying to take pics of the moon but with the clouds moving so fast a lot of my pictures were blurred I tried all diff exposure times and nothing really came out good I'm guess from the fast moving clouds

It was freezing out so i didnt play with to many settings just exposures which i figured to capture the light, but with the fast moving clouds it blurred a lot of the pictures

I should of tried messing with higher shutter speeds but i didnt realize that until the next morning

what do you guys do for a shot like that?

Here is what i think is my best shot with a lot of PS touch

(the lens flare i tried it out i to see if it added that sci-fi look, good or bad?)

Just like many PS filters, they are easily recognizable. As soon as i loaded the page and saw that, i knew it was a lens flare. I always, personally, avoid the filters. Real flares are fine if thats what you are trying to achieve.

Typically for night shots, tiny aperture, long exposure. I do that for the greater DOF mostly. With the nikon remote, i can take long enough exposures that i can often use a high stop. Also, i always shoot at 100 iso, or the lowest possible just because your grain will be obvious. in the dark.

1000 iso at night looks horrid. 1000 iso in a fairly well lit arena, not so bad.
example posted not too long ago on here.

Here, you can tell there is grain but it isnt distracting. I can see the grain around the moon, so it was probably at 400 iso?

I believe it was either at 200 but could of be 400 i was trying so many different settings....

but notice the grain to and was going to be my next question but i figured from the reading ive done it was from the iso settings

I have a couple that are like that, but i wanted to background to be in focus too. Thats just a real quick edit, I'm going to photoshop it in class later tonight, and I'm sure my girlfriend will 'shop it too, and make it look a lot better then mine. lol

You should have tried using a low iso, and a really long shutter speed, like 20 seconds. That way, if clouds did move in front, you probably wouldnt even be able to see them since the light from the moon would be the most in focus

Not a bad moon shot! I'm not sure what it's from, but I like the blue that creeps in.
I personally wouldn't bump the ISO any lower... the moon moves faster than you'd think, and there can be motion blur if you do a 20-30 second exposure. The D50's noise at 400, even 800 ISO is pretty manageable. If the blacks start getting noisy you can always just move up the black point in whatever software you edit and it'll squash the noise, too.

cnuhtowel - I like it, I see what Chaz says about the DoF but I like it this way. When you edit later, maybe try it with a little cooler white balance and slight push from magenta towards green. Then bump the mid-tones about 50%, decrease contrast and a little darker in the shadows/blacks. I think that shot has potential to look really nice. Sorry if that's too much.

Old one - can't wait to get back to central America.

My 365 from yesterday.

This week's theme is black and white, which I really struggle with in every way. I have a hard time picking out shots that will really work in black and white and I can't edit them at all. This is going to be the hardest week for me and I'd like to revisit this theme every few months.

Picked this up Saturday... I wanted this motor sooo bad, but we picked it up for a friend of ours until he can make the trip down to get it.
