WTB inexpensive intro SLR and lens... its a gift for a friend/student of mine in Africa who isn't able to get it himself. I'm honestly not sure what a good value camera would be but I'm not trying to spend too much. Also a bag and card reader if you have those too. Let me know, thanks.

Ok I'll keep it in mind, was picturing something smaller just to carry/protect a camera/lens but we'll see what I come up with.
If anyone knows about the budget/value Canon/Nikon options out there or has one for sale please let me know, I need some assistance here and if I can find something in the next 2-3 weeks that would be awesome because it will take a while to ship internationally.
Bryan

edit: I see a D70 on photo.net for $235 shipped... no details. Is that the going rate? What about a D50 or something similar?

Bryan, that's about going rate for a D70, even a little low. D50's go for about the same price. Also look out for Canon D60 and 10D, they go for pretty cheap. If I see anything I'll send you a link.

copied from potn....

Just got some wireless triggers so I no longer need this. I modded the ends of the cords so that they connect using PS/2 cables like those found on keyboards, etc. The main cord is about 7' long and then I have a keyboard extension cord that is 6ft that will plug in between to make this cord extremely long to get your flash off camera without having to buy wireless triggers. never had one misfire even while using the extension cord too.

the only bad thing about this is the end that attaches to the camera that has a plastic foot for the hot shoe is chipped on one side. that chip makes it so that it wont slide into a hotshoe, but it WILL still mount to any light stands using a screw mount

Looking to get rid of this asap so willing to let go for $45 shipped and paypal'd

a few pics..
everything

connecting ends

the crack on the bottom of the hotshoe mount

I can have this shipped out first thing tomorrow morning if there is any interest. or cheaper if anyone wants to meet up for it

I am selling my Sigma 10-20 because, well... I'm broke now.

Its in near mint/ mint condition. Does not have a lens hood, but for this reason I'ma make this an awesome deal... 350.00 These lenses new are 430.00 plus shipping from B&H. Thats 80 bucks off for a lens, and if you want the hood (you don't need it) you can buy one for like 30 bucks at the most. If anyone wants to make me an offer as well, I am open to hear em.

Edit*
Nikon mount... comes with the warranty card (not sure if the lens is still in warranty time period) but its a great lens. People can vouch for my selling on here.

Chris

BH sells it new for 130$. I have it in new condition because it is coming with the d40 kit, and i will not even touch the lens. So it is still new, but i will sell it for 100$ OBO. I already have a 18-50 sigma lens to cover the focal range. Thanks for the interest.

To explain why I am looking for an inexpensive camera setup, since someone asked...

I spent the summer of 2004 volunteering in Botswana in Dukwi Refugee Camp with http://www.forgenow.org, photographing the camp and what our group was doing, and I also taught photography to one of the refugees there, who's name is Data. He's originally from Sudan but was forced to seek refuge because of the political climate and war in Sudan which put himself and his family in danger.
Since then the political climate has improved somewhat and he decided to go back to Sudan to try and reunite with his family and get back to some sort of normalcy. He has been reunited with some family members which is great, and is just trying to live a normal life.

Data already had a passion for photography before I met him, and while I was there I spent a lot of time with him helping to teach him photography and photoshop. He had a great dedication for what we were doing and I know its something he hopes to continue with on a personal level as well as for work.
In the past 5 years his camera stopped working, and he asked if I could help him get another one, which I would really like to do.

I am looking for a used D70 / lens / filter / small bag / memory card / card reader to send to him. The D70's seem to be about $200-$225 for body only, and about $100 more with a kit lens. This would be great and would allow him to grow into using an SLR which he hasn't done previously. I'm looking for something with very light use so reliability wont be a problem as it is difficult and unreliable to ship these things overseas so I only want to do it once.

If anyone has any ideas on what or where to get this gear, please let me know... and a D40, D50, D60 are also options (unless someone has a specific recommendation for or against). Or if you have an old card reader, memory card, bag, or whatever around that you want to sell or donate to the cause please let me know. I'm not changing the world here but I thought it would be nice to do something nice for another person, and it makes me feel good to help support someones passion for photography halfway around the world.

Ok that was a little longwinded... but it probably still belongs in this thread anyway. I dunno...
