you wanna hear about the tranny? well, at first things look good... i took her home and we had a couple drinks, one thing led to another... and then i noticed the bulge in 'her' pants! i was like zomg!!!
But seriously, we were having problems getting things lined up with the trans since we did all of this without a tranny jack I was planning to go over to the garage for 2-3 hours and hey, we stayed for more than double that and didn't leave till 4:30am, but what are you gonna do. Greg came with me to help out with a small welding job but ended up working with me all night and we really got **** done. Especially without a tranny jack it would have been nice to have two people under the car supporting the trans and one above the car helping with alignment, but it was just the two of us last night. The transmission was on the alignment studs from the night before but wouldnt go that last 1-2" to sit flush... we had fought with it for a long time the night before, so the first thing I did was just take the damn thing off completely to see if anything looked messed up inside. It didnt. We got the trans on a 2nd time but again an alignment issue so we pulled it off. I checked things out and everything looked ok on the pilot bearing, input shaft, etc etc. While we were lifting it up a 3rd time, the trans nearly slid off of the jack which would have seriously sucked, but we were able to catch it and continue on. Third time was a charm and we finally got the trans to line up properly and bolt it on to the motor. We bolted on the trans crossmember up and now the engine and trans are both sitting in the car all proper-like. Also got the front axles into the tranny and put the front suspension on. Greg also helped me get the suuuper rounded off tranny drain plug out of the tranny by actually welding a 14mm closed end wrench to the nut... haha! But it worked perfectly and nothing else was getting the job done. Fred and I also realized that the front ABS sensors are the same on the hub side but had different plugs on the harness side so we swapped those out for the STi ones. I think thats it. Next step is to just connect all the little things in the engine bay. I also have to sort out a rear suspension tophat issue. Lift the driveshaft up and put the underbody panels on, and that should finish up the rear of the car. Interior and dash are still completely out and will probably stay that way until we have things running, so in case there are any wiring issues we can get to them easily. I believe that the interior wiring is 90% finished though. New pictures coming this afternoon...

Bryan.. you know you could have solved all of your trans woes by installing the trans first

put in the trans then the motor? all of us have always done motor first then lift the trans up to it. thats just what makes sense to me, but i dont know.
and we didnt have enough room, or an engine leveller to bolt them together off the car and drop them in together. oh well, its good now. just gotta plug in like 2 things and the swap is complete i think... it'll take like 10 mins. or not.

I didn't know Whiteline Group 4's were a part of this too... damn dude. I also like the whiteboard to keep everything organized. This car is going to be an all-around star.
I remember once you described your car as "the hot girlfriend that youve dated for 3 years" as in it's awesome, but not as much to you since you see it all the time. Pretty sure this upgrades that status a few notches.

yes, looking through the new sti steering wheel into my sti gauge cluster and over to my defi gauges and my 07 STi center console with all red lighting and sti handbrake, etc etc... it should feel like a new car. its like when your long time girlfriend gets some hot new lingerie
or a boobjob even, but i dont really like fake boobs so maybe not.oh and yeah, when i step on the gas pedal, that should be pretty good too . and the sti steering rack is a bit shorter so hopefully thats a nice noticeable difference as well.and yeah i've heard such good things about the whiteline group 4s i had to give them a shot. a lot of people are like 'boo why are you going softer?' but the truth is these should be more compliant and actually handle better than the stiff flexes on all of the imperfect surfaces around. my one concern is that they may compress more than the old suspension and rub in the rear since i dont have much room there. i could raise the car a bit, but i dont want to have to be a monster truck in order to not rub. we'll see....

Not for nothing but couldn't you have just welded a nut to the plug and not killed a wrench? Just asking lol.

Liar!!!!!
You Owe Me A New Wrench!!! lol, j/k. the wrench was a piece of crap. I kept the set around for just a purpose like this. there are times where you need to use a wrench & possibly destroy it in the process. its nice to have a choice instead of using uber expensive Snap-On wrenches. although since Snap-On has a lifetime warranty, I wonder what they would say if I did that to one? anyways, now that the engine & trans is in, the car will start going together alot more quickly. the dash wont be installed until the last minute but the carpet, electronics, & gauges will be ready to go very soon. stay tuned. |
