Looks awesome! Just spent $60 on a hood and stripped/rusted it for the beater, I would have considered doing this instead if I had known.

Resin may mess up the vinyl from the heat when curing, let alone the chemicals possibly making it a gooey mess. Resin doesn't bond to plastics or vinys as strong as if it were metal, wood, or itself.

Another issue would be having the hard outter shell of resin/clear over the plyable, soft vinyl. If any flexing or weight is caused/added, there could be cracking issues with the resin... Clear does have a decet flex to it tho.

Most resins worth using get pretty damn hot when they cure. That could potentiallly ruin the vinyl along with the properties of the resin.

If someone wants it shiny... why not wrap over it in clear vinyl. Twice the work though. Might as well do the real thing then.

Several people on the my350z forums have cleared this stuff in there interior and it holds up just fine, with the gloss finish.

I've heard it will work, but that's it.

Maybe we can bump heads and try to figure this out one day.

I love the look of CF, but the whole fascination with carbon fiber used to be that you had a light weight part with a really nice look to it as well.

Interior pieces are a different story due to the fact they were there for show to begin with when molded in carbon fiber.

I do have to admit the dry carbon would look good in my black gray interior though. We'll see, maybe it will grow on me. I'd be interested if you could clear it to protect it a little bit more.

It looks like its already lifting above the HVAC controls and on the bottom of the door insert on the right in the 2nd picture. Also on the bottom of the insert on the driver side looks like it needs trimmed as it kicks back out over the alcantara/suede.

Photos were taken before the final once over. Still needed some trim/tuck.
It was laid on, but not heated across and squeegeed on the flat surfaces.


This application also used no primer.
We plan to meet back up and see how its all holding without it.
I recommended it, but we figure we'd see how it'll hold without it.

It may lift, it may not. Either way- any imperfections can be fixed.

here is a photo of a simple install.

i had an extra set of mini headlight rings laying around...
they were paintmatched red and have been sitting on the FS for a while now for $60...
I wrapped em and going to put them back on the classifieds. we'll see what happens.


the vinyl has glue. the primer is just to help with the small tight curves around the edges.
its an adhesive promoter.

yeah that headlight looks cool and the interior does look nice on that Lancer. Its growing on me.

i did it on my hardtop for 3 reasons

1. A real carbon hardtop costs about 2-3k with all new seals, OEM glass window, shipping etc...
2. The paint on my hardtop was horrible, the P/O rattle canned the red hardtop black and didn't do a good job at it
3. This was much cheaper than even going to Maaco to paint it, they wanted 400$ to paint it and since i'm friends with Jbell i got it done for much less than that.

Also he hasn't shown a pic of it yet, but if you are 5ft or further away, it just looks like your part is flat black. only when you walk up to it to inspect it do you realize it looks like carbon

1. i had an aftermarket, real carbon top on my s2000 before i sold. more hassle than it's worth.

and yep. on large pieces, the carbon has this illusion of blending together into a flat black.

its interior pieces, and small bits where the patter in the carbon really stands out, like the headlight rings.
