did you see the link on the ION/plasma rockets?

we already currently use them. they run off of abundant gases on our planet already. They can run for longer periods of time than chemical rockets and they can accellerate to speeds faster than chemical rockets as well. the problem is there isn't enought thrust from them to just leave our planet yet after that they are great. we already use them in deep space satellites/probes.

This is a cool idea, but I wonder what's involved after you leave earth. The ships can't be that expensive because everyone lives different lengths of time. I see this as "who can throw the football the farthest"...

ships wouldn't need to resemble our current space shuttle. I said previous, i see ship being something that is built in space in parts like the space station. you would need to build something large enough and self sustaining enough to keep human, animal and plant life on it for generations. If it could only support a generation or two then it may be a pointless endeavor.

Honestly speaking though... where would this go? A craft manned by volunteers may only make it to mars... it may only make it to pluto... this ship would never make it to the next closest habitable planet and would only be a science vessel that is expected to... more than likely take its crew and disappear without a trace after 50 years

i'd still go

Anybody ever see the movie "Moon"? Kinda reminiscent of that with a multigenerational spaceship. I'm totally in, too, although I imagine I'd actually be out because of my insulin dependency.
