Like the others said, I would change the fluid penziol synchromesh, bg synchroshift, all good fluids recomended by the top DSM transmission rebuilders in the area. Adjusting the pedals and checking the shifter cables for proper installation.

Reverse will seem to grind a little every now and again, since it doesnt have a sychro like the 1-5 gear, the grinding or clunking is the straight cut reverse idler gear sliding up into position to engage.

The other problem with it kicking you back out of gear in first is common with worn dogteeth on the 1st gear hub/slider. Hopefully not the problem.

Good luck.

Even if it is, theyre pretty easy to find used for a reasonable price, and also pretty easy to put in.

I had a harder time replacing the trans on my 240 than I did on my sisters Eclipse... oddly enough.

Everything has been said. At this point it's trial and error.

Have you checked the clutch master or slave cylinders? check the Clutch fluid, if it's low it's probably leaking somewhere...
I just did the master on my girlfriends 99 Eclipse spyder, and had to spend a little time adjusting the pedal. Her problem was very similar to yours. Check the firewall inside the car where the master cylinder comes in, if there's oil dripping down from it you have a bad master cyl...
The book says the pedal should be 6.5" from the floor & 1/4 to 1/2" of play for the 2.4l in the spyder... The 2l engines are 7" I think?
Also when you did the clutch did you replace the pilot bearing? I've seen situations when people decide not to replace them, or the old one "Won't come out", and after they mangle it they decide not to replace it.
Good Luck.
