Thanks for all the input guys...Im really looking to purchase something new...like I said I have looked at the D40/x D50 D60 D70 and lesser Nikons...but decided I the D80 would be the one I'd buy and just start with a kit lens to get started...The D80 is the replacement of the D50/D70 from my understanding...and I listed the prices that I had found the D80 and the XSi for...so in this case the XSi is a little more...but does come with 2 lenses...but the D80 is cheaper and only one lens that would be a little more versatile...I guess I'll just have to decide which I like better....

So the XSi seems to be a better camera?
Are Nikon Lenses better then Canon?

Kit lenses blow, you quickly want to upgrade so don't waste the money.

I understand...I figured I'd rather start out with my budget putting money towards a better body and a ok lens to start with then i can upgrade lenses later on...

Don't believe that canon glass is superior to Nikons glass, because its not. Both make great camera's and lenses. Also don't listen to the comments about people saying, "I switched from Canon to Nikon" or vice versa. I have talked to many a pro who has switched from Canon to Nikon and Vice versa. They are the 2 top companies... its all about what you want.

ha i had to say it simply based on what i shoot but he is right. Canons top glass and Nikons top glass are both amazing and will produce virtually identical photos. it really comes down to what you prefer which has been said over and over again. shoot some canon stuff and shoot some nikon stuff and find out what YOU like. asking us is just going to get you biased opinions.

the best deal would be buying a used body and some glass that doesnt consist of a kit lens.

I say we drop by a camera store some time and you play with the XTi, XSi, and D80...maybe even the XS

unless you're throwing your camera off of counters and cliffs, you shouldnt really need a warranty.

Warranties are never for mistreating stuff...they're in case **** goes wrong that's out of your control. Now accidental damage protection plans, on the other hand, are something completely different. I have a 3-year plan for my 70-200L and really don't regret it, considering it would more than pay for itself with one minor repair.

iunno, im not big on protection plans and not having a warranty never really bothered me. these things are built to perform very well for a very long time. an incredibly small percent of these things are ever faulty.

^ I have to agree, warranty's are nice, but if you buy a nicely used camera you should be ok. Its when you buy some beat up old ****ty camera.

The 18-55 IS kit lens that comes with the XSi is actually very decent and gets good reviews all over the place, the build quality isn't the best but the optics are awesome. I have that lens and the 55-250 IS which is also great for my XTi and I absolutely love them, the images they produce are mind blowing considering the cost...

I'm actually selling my XTi to a buddy and picking up an XSi next week because I really want Live View but the XTi was a GREAT camera and I can see myself picking up a used one for my girlfriend if she becomes interested in photography again

i wouldn't waste the money on a third party warranty. Canon gives a decent year warranty, if there is no problem i doubt there will be one later unless you mis-use the equipment or are stupid with it. I get warranties on things like TV's or laptops... not on lenses. also a decent amount of used stuff still might be under warranty?

are the warranties transferable? I don't have a problem buying some lenses used...but really only if I could go test them out. I don't know I just want a new camera body with either the Nikon or Canon warranty, I wouldn't pay extra for one...

Anyways this has run its course Brian and I are going to hit up some camera stores later and I'll get my hands on a D80 and XSi and see which one like or see if there is a different model that would fit me better, thanks guys!

a lot of the warranties are transferable because most people don't fill out that card until they have to send their equipment in for service, so as long as you get a blank warranty card it's good to go.

i was all about new bodies and new lenses but with my last purchase (the 40D) i don't think i'd buy a new body again. it's basically wasting a few hundred dollars to be the first one to pull it out of the box. Most photogs take excellent care of their equipment since they rely on using it. a little point and shoot i could see wanting to buy new since it'll get treated as if it was easily replaceable. larger camera bodies don't get such harsh treatment. trust me i understand your concern, but you can get my used 40D with a grip for less then a new xsi. camera prices drop off heavily once a newer model is released. it's a painful and expensive thing to learn.
either way still go out and play with a few cameras. just don't over look a used body soo quickly.

Well I went to Ritz/Camera Shop and messed around with a few cameras and decided I just really like how the D80 felt in my hands and where all the buttons and wheels etc where, plus it just felt like a more solidly built camera compared to the XSi...not knocking the canon by any means, both cameras were very impressive I just think the D80 was a better fit for me...

So I just ordered it from Ritz online since it was the best deal especially without shipping and sales tax...plus picked up 3 4gb extreme III for free after the mail in rebate...but I'd say if you got $60 you can afford to put out till you get the rebate everyone should go get the cards!!

Thanks for the help and suggestion guys! and Happy Thanksgiving!!!
