Im now carrying around my d80 with sigma 18-200, and sb-600. i think its about 6 or so lbs.
I'd say go for a used d70, or d80. you should be able to find a good amount of used cameras around now, from ppl upgrading to the d90. It is all in the glass, but i ditched the d40 cause my 50mm f1.8 doesnt auto focus with the d40. |

I shot a D40x As well...No Complaints here, for Starter DSLR I think its a Great Compact little setup...and dont let the lens factor stray you away most top quality glass has AFS already built in....and its not that you CANT use a Non AFS lens on the d 40 it just wont auto focus but if your using it for still photography you can always manual focus the lens.
IMO I think its a Great Starter Camera.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. Jack has strongly suggested Canon 40D/50D - I have extremely tiny hands so cameras that are too large or bulky are going to be real awkward for me. My hand can't even reach around a Coke can, so.. I don't think small cameras will be a problem for me. And Big Jim major LOL on that picture you posted
![]() Jack and I are gonna go to Best Buy or something and take a look/feel..and so he can drool over the 50D.

Fixed. Although I do like the fiddyD, I'm happy with my 40D. Jul, just get a Canon so we can share lenses!

Have you ever seen the Sidekick phones? I have maybe a half a knuckle palm down on those phones. I don't even cover half the can when I hold a soda can lol..

That's actually the exact reason I went with a Canon xti as opposed to a 30D earlier this year, the 30D was just too dam big. I prefer something that's easy to carry around and luckily the xti has all the main features and functions I need. Not once did I regret not going with the 30D, though I will admit that I do want the new xsi that came out a few months ago, live view and the new button layout sure would be nice.

I must be the only one who likes large cameras, I have pretty big hands, so canon's and camera's like the Nikon D50, just dissapeared in my hand and felt funny. I got a made sure I picked up a battery grip with my next camera... love it to death.

i noticed no one mentioned the D60 in here.... that's also a good mid ranged camera. it gives you more options than the D40 but the body is not as heavy or as large as the D80. and since prices on DSLRs are continuously falling, you can get the body for a couple hundred bucks.
definitely look into it; that's what i use and i love it. its perfect for carrying around so if you want a camera that you can carry with you and not feel weighed down its awesome. |

I think I'm going with a d40 for my first DSLR.
I'm coming to like the small body of the D40 versus the larger Nikons I use at school (where I am a photojournalism teacher). I plan on doing mostly travel photography, and I figure something small and cheap is best for me right now. And if I get a d40 I get to use all the lenses we have at school, and any others we might acquire in the near future!

Got my d40 and I love it.
Put about 1k shots on it first weekend I had it, and only one complaint. I just wish it had more than 3 AF points. If it did I wouldn't have had to manual focus nearly as much. But none-the-less, it's a great beginner DSLR, at a great price, that takes real good pictures. Here's my first shots I took with it: http://www.tristatetuners.com/forum/...ad.php?t=67000
