First off, it's a myth about being less eco friendly than the hummer. That article picked the most filthy place for battery developing (and mining), whatever it was called. The purpose of that article was to discredit the prius. We should just stop making batteries altogether


Something like .002 percent of all toyota hybrids on the road have had their batteries replaced, and the cost is down to 2-4k for that replacement.

It's a start and it a move in the right direction. Would it make sense for me to trade in my taurus station wagon which gets on average 20mpg to buy a prius for 28k? no....not by a long shot. a corolla for 4 grand that gets 30+mpg would be a better idea.


BUT...in a few years we'll have plug in prius's or some toyota w/plug in. and that will absolutely make sense for some people like myself. Right now I have a 4 mile drive to work each way, 5 days a week, and thats primarily where my gas money goes.

Imagine if I could do that all on battery charge

Plus it would help balance out the amount of crap my supra spews out into the environment.

To the OP, good observation for sure!!
my wife was looking into a hybrid...i tryed to talk about it in contex similar to the OP, but she called around and had a Toyota sales man tell her it was SILLY for her since she only drives very little....exact comments the OP gave!
Like Bryan said, they are a step in the right direction, but the new
TDI technologies, newer fuel technologies, and better utilization of current EFI systems like the civics and even Ford escorts are very good. Who knows a new fuel letting US keep high powerd fun cars but getting 50mpg with 400hp could happen

I wanna know why hybrid cars are generally ugly....i can even tell a hybrid civic from a mile away....with the moon caps and smaller wheels. I thin k the prius is a ugly car....the only compliment i have is that they are pretty roomy inside.

The prius looks so weird because its designed to be aerodynamic because less resistance = less fuel used. The wheels are also extremely small to improve gas mileage. And the batteries are under warranty for 100k miles.

On a different note, the batteries are not the least but enviromentally friendly but they are getting better. Tesla uses a lithium ion batter iirc that can be thrown out safely but they can also be recycled.

i read that they have plug in prius in japan...i read that they took it out because the u.s. markets seems to dislike plug ins. there is a place in california that coverts them to plug in...something like 80-100 mpg....but its not cheap...i think they use different batteries on the plug in version.

I'm looking forward to the day when I drive around in a 0 emissions vehicle which really low operating costs, and I have a weekend gasoline powered car which I have to pay extra taxes and fees on to be able to operate with fuel at $10+ a gallon. It will balance out in the end and I'll still have my 'old fashioned' toy. Or maybe they'll have 600+ hp 0 or low emissions vehicles running on alternative fuel which blow these archaic gasoline powered vehicles out of the water... that could be fun too, but I might still like my old fashioned gasoline car the same way I like my old fashioned black and white film camera.

I don't care what anyone says..I loved the 05 prius. ...within the first year had over 90,000 miles. It now has almost 210,000 miles...running fine.Orig battery. No problems ever besides the basics like oil changes. the batteries also aren't that expensive to replace. They can be replaced in cells so if one cell goes bad it can be swapped out rather than the entire battery unit.

I did get a lot of crap from my friends for having a prius and hummer in the same driveway for a while tho..

All I have to say is my Dad owns a 2003 VW Jetta TDI wagon and averages 45 mpg city/highway. When he's really trying he can consistently get 52 mpg. You don't need a hybrid to get excellent gas mileage period. Besides the fact that hybrids really don't get that good of gas mileage.

I don't hate the car. Well, I do hate the car, it's ugly and slow, but that's not why I really hate it.

I hate it because of the unbelievable amount of yuppies that drive it thinking they're God's greatest gift to nature preservation. Drives. Me. Nuts.

Well hate the car or love the car, I was simply making a point. Hybrid "technology" isn't needed to obtain excellent gas mileage.

I do agree, or rather I should say, Hybrid technology isn't needed to produce mid 40s MPG, it should be doing much better for the cost and the hype.

Word, Some people over on gassavers.org are getting incredible mpg numbers in non hybrid cars...I must point out the Honda Civic VX which first arrived on US shores in 92 was able to obtain 45-50mpg ;) In my opinion that is amazing Honda then made the HX in 96 with similar numbers...why can't we get these car's today! Well I do know the vx probably wouldn't meet safety standards for today plus is lacked any power options and A/C(well optional)...so it probably wouldn't sell very well...the Hybrids are kind of the way for the car makers to please the consumer...but yea a prius isn't worth $28K...in the the long run if you bought a Honda Fit or a Toyota Yaris over the life of the car loan including fuel costs based on EPA ratings...the prius would cost you thousands more....you wouldn't save anything getting 50mpg...


My Del Sol with a D15z1(VX swap) gets me 40mpg in the city and 50+ on the highway ;)
