Sure, I'd be interested to know more about the Halons and where the shop is. And in response to before, Halon are used in airplanes very often, for the same reasons they are used in cars.
Another option is to contact K+G about a possible group rate if anyone else is interested.

All I can say is that whatever you decide, Make sure to have two on board. You were wrong. The worst part isnt having a fire on the side of the road and not being able to put it out.

It's having a fire, using one entire extingusher and the fire not going out. Thats why I always have 2

...or just make sure i get one thats big enough to handle 90%+ of situations i'd encounter, right? dont see the point in carrying 2.

lol If you say so. I have 2 big ones in the Rx7. Thats mostly because I have to reroute the 90psi Mazda pump back to the return because the SBC only sips 6psi. I did run all -6AN lines but it makes me nervous.

I just would much rather be double prepared than think I was covered and find out on the side of 309 that I needed more than one Halo can.

If you do that, talk to Lynn. If I didn't know better, I would swear he was the only person that works there!

Does anyone know what the useful life of a halon extinguisher is if it just sits around?

Subscribing for the possible group buy. I have wanted to get one since 2004 when I seen no less than 10 cars on fire while fleeing FL during one of the hurricanes but that is a totally different story. I have researched them on and off but just haven't bought one yet.

But there is a difference between the fire department and the owner putting out a fire. The owner has to tow it home afterwards.

yea but fire engines can catch on fires to...we had dry chem extinguishes in the front just in case that ever happened....and sorry to say..but a fire engine is worth a lot more than anyones car on here.

bringing it back... just reread the thread and its a good one.

I contacted K+G to get an idea on pricing individually and also if we can get a discount for a group buy, and he said he'll get back to me tomorrow.

You can find more info about these extinguishers at: http://www.h3rperformance.com/halguard_products.htm

I'm personally looking at a 2.5lb chrome extinguisher, which is listed on Summit and Jegs for about $160, plus shipping, plus haz-mat fees.

A summary of pricing from Summit/Jegs is:

1.4 lb: $100 for red, $125 for chrome
2.5 lb: $120 for red, $160 for chrome
5.0 lb: $220 for red, $260 for chrome

Skipping shipping and haz-mat charges would be nice, so we'll see what kind of prices K&G will come up with and take it from there...

Halon is definitely a good idea but some may consider it overkill. A basic Dry-Chem Sodium Bicarbonate will do just fine. It will be substantially cheaper and will take care of any type of fire your car can produce. Its what we use at my station for most basic fires, especially when we get that kid on the side of the road with his subwoofer or head unit burning up.

I understand that it will put out the fire just fine, but thats not the whole story. I am not interested in causing further damage to paint and electrical from the dry chemical... as far as I'm concerned there's only one choice for automotive and its Halon.

You wont have a reaction with the dry chem at all, just clean it up when its out... dont let it sit around. It just basically baking soda. Just dust it off.

Edit: Halon discharges also suck cause if you find yourself in the downwind direction you may not be standing to continue estiquish it fully

Fire Departments jobs are to protect our citizens AND their belongings. We wouldn't use it if it caused damage worse than the fire, or if there was a better choice.

is halon a poison? from what I remember my dad talking about it (used to design/setup dinosaur rooms for ibm) the main problem was it displacing all the oxygen.

No its not that bad, but i always find NaC2 much easier to handle and deal with. Halon is a poison of some type and has been discontinued from use in many places. Technology of firefighting has changed alot of the last few years.

Bryan, I might be interested. Have you spoken to someone regarding what is a good size for our cars?

Ok so good and bad news... KG was a little more expensive, but still comes out better than Summit after they apply shipping and Haz Mat charges (which are $22 per item).

From what I gather, the 2.5 lb is a good size to keep in your car, but if you ask anyone they'll say to have 'the biggest one you can fit' with you.

Edited the following because I am now working with ExtremePSI to try and set up a group buy through them... read on for details...
Pricing on the 2.5 lb from KG is $135 for the red and $175 for the chrome. It comes with a bracket but you'll probably have to fab up something to attach that to. These are for pick up only and the shop is located in Broomall, PA and he said that he wouldn't be able to do much for a bulk purchase so its just easiest if everyone takes care of their own order. They do not stock them so you have to call ahead to order and then pick it up when it comes in.
If any vendors carry or want to carry these extinguishers step up and be heard! I'd love to do this through a local vendor if we can instead...

And as for size, the answer I keep getting is 'get the biggest one you can fit'... which doesn't help too much but it seems like the 2.5 lb is a good size to have, although I know some guys run the 1.4 lb just to have something in the car with them. Every fire starts small, so it depends on the scenario and how quickly you're able to react to it.

Dimensions on the 2.5 lb are:
Height: 14.8 in.
Diameter: 3.0 in.
Total Width: 5.0 in.

You can check dimensions of the other sizes on H3R's website...

This video is one of the things that sold me on having a proper fire extinguisher within arms reach...
