The fees are pretty basic: We can't spend any more than $500 for the car + any non-safety parts that we install. Each driver must pay a $100 entry fee and they need a current competition license. Unless you race competitively in the SCCA or NASA, chances are you don't have one so they offer an event license at the track for an additional $50. Finally we need to buy all of the safety gear and wear parts. That's the biggest expense. A roll cage, a racing seat, racing harness, helmets/racing suits, brake pads/rotors, fire extinguisher, a spare set of wheels/tires, gas, etc. All of that stuff is "out of pocket" expenses, unless we can get a couple donations. All of the races have been out in CA and I think there has been one in MI. From what I have seen they are usually run on paved 1/2 mile oval tracks with a course laid out with cones/tractor tires. If you have been to the Formula D events at Wall Speedway in NJ, that is very similar to type of track they use. Imagine that track with about 30 beater cars racing side by side and you'll have a really good idea of what to expect. In fact, Wall Speedway would be the perfect track for this event.

My friend attended the event in Michigan a couple months ago. He said it was the most fun he's had in a while. You don't wanna build a killer fast car that will out run or out handle all the other cars because if somehow you're beating everyone when they vote they will vote for your car to get crushed. They were running an Infinity G20 and actually were up to second place before they threw a rod. They attached a huge dildo on their car but the track made them cover it up. haha. Another thing was the team was all dudes who work at Pratt & Miller (Alms Corvetts) so they "borrowed" some things like the fuel filler. They gutted the stock opening so they could fit it in there and get a full tank in I think he said 3 seconds. lol
I'm going to be joining the team next year as a helper but not a driver because they already have that covered. We already have our car. My buddy has a either 92 or 93 turbo legacy. We just have to swap out my extra fuel pump from my Rs leftover stuff. He also has a friend in Michigan that sells wrecked stis and sells them. We both bought our swaps from him. We'll probably end up getting some stock sti handling goodies and possibly some power adders aka bigger turbo. We'll see how it goes though. I can't wait for it.

Are you stealing our sponsor!?
I was searching RacingJunk.com and Streetassasin mentioned the races up in the Poconos. Here's a racing truck built for the races up there: http://www.racingjunk.com/post/10111...for-cheap.html It's not the sportiest thing in the world and it would be a lot more fun to build a race car from scratch, but this is really cheap and just about as close to a "turn key" as we're going to find. Maybe if it's still available after they announce the race dates we can consider it.

I've been reading this thread a little bit and this sounds pretty cool. If all is good on my end I would like to join up with this event. Also depending on how things go with a little project of mine, I might have an AE86 that I would sell cheap. Definitely under $500.

Alright I would love to do this
Could we try to figure how much each driver would have to chip in? I know we gotta figure out sponsers and stuff before hand. But I dont have much cash, and id love to be one of the drivers. I autox and im not bad =) As for a car, what about a old caddy/buick. It would be tuff as hell, and have deicent power. Of course it would handle like a pile of poo. the bimmer would be nice.. but would it take a beating? Ive herd CRXs do pretty well in the lemons...

The 2008 schedule has been announced and the race at Stafford Springs, CT on August 23-24 is the closest.
I think the next step is to secure a spot that we can store/build the car. Once we have that lined up we can go car shopping. Anyone have a place in mind? IMHO it would be best in a central location like KOP or north philly so that it wouldn't be too far from either the guys in the city or the guys out in the suburbs. I might be able to land a spot in Hatfield, but that would be a hike for anyone living in the city.

Yeah, a garage is very important. I think most important though is going to be organization. Lets get together see whos dedicated to this and setup some tasks to get done.
