Just out of wonder, how many roll cages have you fabricated?

Just because I'm a perfectionist, I prefer to TIG weld my cages. First because I feel more in control with my TIG torch than my MIG. And secondly because TIG welds just look better.

It does not appear that his welds are incomplete and/or do not have good penitration. It just looks like he had to stop a couple of times. Very understandable. It's quite hard to get the top of the cage next to the roof. And that oxidation? It will wipe right off with some mineral spirts or steel wool

Nice lookin cage

And why do you think it wouldn't? And what tech? If you guys keep bringing up NHRA boringness, then I don't even want to hear it.

Again, have you seen the cage in person? Do you do tech inspections on cages? Is it your cage? Do you have a vested interest in its performance?

If you answer yes to any of these questions, stay and continue to contribute to this thread.

If you can not answer yes go back to coaxing kids in civics to race you....thats probably more your speed.

Firstly that is the most ignorant thing I've heard - racing civics... I know of civics that will smoke your supra, does that mean it's still up to his standard?

Firstly - having discussed this with a scca friend of mine, he says all qualified cages must have continuous bead. will a tech pass that cage with the bead with numerous start/stops? Probably. Does that mean it satisfies the requirement? No.

"15.6.15 Welds
All welding must be of the highest quality with full penetration and shall conform to the
American Welding Society D1.1, 1994 Edition, Structural Welding Code, Chapter 10,
Tubular Structures and Standards for the material used. Arc welding should be used
whenever possible. It is strongly recommended that the welder inspect all welds using
Magnaflux™, x-ray, or other effective methods. All tubes must be welded 360-degrees
around the circumference of the tube."

Well its not arc welded (tig) but thats fine... full penetration... questionable. You can look in AWS D1.1 and probably find that it recommends two scenarios - one full pass continuous with a start/stop at the end with plenty of gas purge (fail). Or, if you do multiple start/stops, it will require a root pass and then a 2nd pass again. Obviously this is not possible with a MIG, as you'll just have globs of weld building up. This is probably why the NASA standard recommends arc welding

The close up welds show a lack of smoothness between the toe and the metal which results in what is called a cold lapped weld and is a sign of improper penetration. If I had to guess I'd say your wire speed was too high for your power.

Continuous bead means continuous, no gaps. It doesn't mean that I would have to contort my body in all kinds of directions to weld the fulll 360 degrees around the tube with out stopping. Good luck finding someone that can do that.

Arc welding. What does GMAW mean? Gas Metal Arc Welding also known as MIG. So that means that MIG is arc welding and you should know that stick welding is also arc welding.

You're judging the fact that I didn't have enough shielding gas because of rust formed on a weld a while after it was done, so I'm sure that's accurate. The picture isn't totally clear, I know what you mean where is says it looks like a cold lapped weld for a very small part of some of the welds, but it's just the way the picture came out. I really don't know how you think you can do such a detailed analysis of my welding in a picture of a weld that hasn't been cleaned. It's just not accurate.

In discussion with a cage builder he said he prefer TIG obviously because of penetration and heat control as well as speed. It looks like wirespeed was too fast for the heat level which might have otherwise been ok. If the picture is not accurate take another with it cleaned I do not believe it'll change the toes of the weld from being cold lapped into smooth penetration but you never know I bet the weld bead will look very grey even after being wire brushed - that's going to show us poor shielding and contamination.

Just wondering what civics has to do with this thread? And what does your car run btw?

Oh god dont turn this into a "my car is faster than yours" drag-racing thread of gayness.

At least the discussion beforehand involved some sort of knowledge and information.

Exactly who cares about drag racing. I didn't build a drag cage to be inspected by the NHRA, this is a drift/road race car that will be inspected by those sanctioning bodies. And I will stand by the fact that this cage will pass inspection and is perfectly safe.

So I'm not going to waste my time and bring the car back inside, and start cleaning all the welds just to prove to the internet experts with little or no experience or formal training or education in this subject that it's fine. So I'm sorry, you can't be happy with my welds, but I will let you know when the cage has no problem passing any tech that it has to go through.

Why do you care so much about what his supra runs? He doesn't drag race, he doesn't take his car to the drag strip, he doesn't do any of that. So technically his car is undefeated at drag racing. It's never lost.

Wow, Napoleon, relax...last time I checked, its tangability was never in question...i don't understand your statement.

And as far as "what it runs" i can honestly tell you that i haven't the foggiest idea, nor do I have any inclination to find out...

Edit: Damn right, I'm Undefeated!!

Man this thread was so cool till you guys came in.

You must have failed reading.

The only one who talked **** was the civic guy, no one else talked about big game or racing or being faster or anything, this thread has nothing to do with that.

Talk about the cage or GTFO.
