thats rediculus. my DSM is probably the most reliable car I have ever know. I can always rely on it to be sitting in my driveway in need of another repair, and therefore I get absolutly amazing gas milage.

But on a serious note, If your looking for reliable the only DSM you would want to seriously consider would be one owned by some little old man and no one else. if your getting it from a kid its almost garunteed to be beaten on and the person is probably getting rid of it for a good (expensive) reason.

I would say that the handling of an AWD car depends on the system, bias, diffs, everything. I wouldn't be so quick to throw it with a FF as a Rally Car AWD system is different than quattro, is different than a dsms AWD, which is different than a normal subaru awd with helical front, DCCD center, and 2 way rear...

There are so many variables I would say putting AWD up that high is a little pre-emptive.

i said on average. most awds are FF based and therefore will not turn any better, in fact they ought to be worse. consider the evo, which needs computers to correct its deficiencys as a platform. in fact most of the systems you have mentioned also needed special engineering to fix the fact that the basic platform sucks. now then, there are other kinds yes. fr-awd is pretty damned good on some cars (skyline) and then theres also mr and rr-awd which exist only to keep rich idiots from killing themselves in a spectacular fashion. anyway we are waay off the point of my post which was that real handling is in your suspension, tires, and curb weight. none of us is a pro driver and we dont regularly commute on racetracks, and while our cars still have platform based advantages/disadvantages, we mere mortals are incapable of weilding them effectively on the street. i sure can't

My DSM was owned by one lady before me, who bought it new. It was bone stock, and I have had NO problems with it for over two years now. ;-)

If you are okay with an automatic, I know of someone who is selling a 96 Impreza coupe for $4k that was meticiously maintained and has alot of extra parts to go with it:
