im torn between the 70-200 F2.8 and the 200 F2.8. i think im going to bypass the IS for now because eh, i dont think i'll need it. My other concern is the sharpness of the zoom vs. the prime. ugh, decisions decisions..still considering the F4 IS

i use a 2.8 is lens for my dance competition work(low low light situations and lots of movement trying to eliminate blurry shots) and i love the lens def worth the money. I kno alot of canon users sometimes shun the whole 3rd party lenses but if u do not want to hit the bank on that 2.8 is lens then maybe try the tamron version (70-200 f2.8 VR), http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/...0-200_2p8_c16/
this is a lens i am considering aside gettings the f4 IS lens just because i want the bokeh availability and i generally do need a faster lens because of some of the work i am going to start to shoot more often. and its half the price of the 2.8 is canon version.

You'll limit what you can shoot with a 200mm prime. You lose a wide range of flexibility by not going with the 70-200.

I prefer a prime

Don't get me wrong, I loved my 70-200 but I just prefer using a prime

i've decided on the prime. not having zoom wont really effect me too much since i'll be shooting sports outdoors with plenty of room to move around.

Grimm I got to shoot with a 70-200 f/4L USM last night and it was great. We used a tripod and were doing scenery so IS was not needed. It was kinda heavy though, and I hear the IS version is even heavier.

You think the 70-200 f/4 is heavy?
What does it weigh, like 1.5 pounds?

Compared to my 2, its a brick. I had the camera strapped around my neck and the lens was weighting the thing down a lot and swinging around. I made the mistake of running up some steps without holding the camera and the lens smacked me in the dick.

carry around a long prime or zoom IS for a while and the 70-200 non IS will feel like a cupcake

I really recommend the zoom. Primes are awesome and I love them, but the flexibility of the 70-200 is something you'll want when you can't zoom out from a 320mm equivalent, especially shooting outdoor sports. And the zoom is still an incredibly sharp lens.
If you were talking a 200mm f2 or f1.8 it would be a different story, but they're mad cash and for the same speed why not the zoom?

f2.8 is more important to me than IS, but that's your call.

hoping you don't find 200mm too long on a crop body. I know on my 20D my 135L is pretty damn long already. But congratulations on on the purchase I'm sure you'll love that glass either way

eh we'll see. im not gonna be super close to anything im shooting. i'll be on the sidelines for sports but that will give me room to move around so i think i'll be ok. if not, i'll sell it and pick up something else lol. or keep it and buy another body. who knows. just experimenting for my own experience right now.

well just to chime in, i haven't run into an issue with not having IS. And the 2.8 is well worth the extra money. prime vs zoom... it's your call, it's more dependent on your own preference and style. a zoom has more flexibility which i think is important in un-controlled environments.
