If you want some good advice of what to buy, you should first think about what you should NOT buy.

IMHO, avoid the following companies: Compaq, HP and Toshiba.

I actually reccommend Dell because of their customer support, but you have to pay a lot to get an all-around good laptop.

Acer is another brand which is middle of the road and cost-effective. Check out www.newegg.com and compare reviews, you'd be surprised what some people say about different brands.
