ditto. two weeks notice means you are done that day, if they even let you stay the full day.

hell when i quit Hooters, i told the manager off and threw a stool and asked him to step outside. i got a standing ovation from the customers and the girls. it was great! then i was in like 3 weeks after that and he came in from home just to kick me out, i got 6 free beers and free fries that night cuz he booted me before i could pay
You're correct, they can be held liable for a bad references.
But they don't have to provide one either.
When HR of a company looking to hire you calls for a reference and gets no reply or a less than enthusiastic response, they know what that means.

I'll go out of my way to give a good ex-employee a great reference. I tend to forget to return phone calls for reference's of a not so great employee.

I was going to mention the same thing. My unusually bad reference is, "I'm going to refrain from providing a referal". They get the point.

Bottom line is that giving notice is a courtesy. You are doing for them what you would expect in return from someone else should you be in a management position.

That's because they don't want to be sued for Defamation of Character for giving you a bad reference. You getting a new job wouldn't affect them in anyway, so why risk the chance of getting sued?
