'Street' car. I would say something thats got all options in tact, looks nice and is fast. Maybe the 7 second turbo (6-speed)viper or (auto)supras. These cars are in a different league then the street dsms.

Thats no streetcar. Its on alcohol, has a 3 gallon cell, exhaust out the front, lexan, fg hatch an a friggin parachute.
Ive seen video of him doing tuning pulls on the street but its far from a streetcar.

Who cares about value when you're talking about an 'ultimate' car.
Best budget drag bucket, I think DSMs might have their place.

Well look at the title of the thread, then look at all the responses claiming that DSMs are the ultimate street cars. I was just responding to that with my opinion that they aren't and I showed the type of cars which I feel might fit the bill a little better. Now you're changing it up and telling me that a DSM is a good performing car for the money, I agree with that. That doesn't mean that its the ultimate street car.

+1, we are talking street cars for a normal person not a shop sponsered car.

And how often do you see a viper like that at a street race? Exactly, you don't. But you do see DSM's beating up on just about all the cars there.

No. You typically see the RWD muscle cars and singled Supras stomping on everybody. (we aren't talking about south philly right?) Again, we were talking about the ultimate street car, not the car you see the most at the street races or the most affordable car, etc..
BTW that viper isnt shop owned or sponsored. Just shop driven.

For the common "tuner" and "garage mechanic" thats looking for a "street" car, I think i'm going to have to agree. DSM's are great cars. A "street car" I perceive as an easily obtainable car that was built for the street and not for track that can be driven on the street. DSM's have lots of aftermarket parts, are pretty easy to work on, can make VERY impressive power and on top of all that can still be used for everyday driving. Somedays I miss my DSM

Of course I'd rather keep a rotary under my hood ;)

Sure they're great until you run into a slicked H/C LS1 car on nitrous. Or a single turbo auto supra. Or a backhalved anything.
Hell I could put together a foxbody mustang that would stomp most DSMs for CHEAP. The aftermarket is there, the parts and research are there. Not that I would but Im just trying to make a point. DSMs can be made fast for cheap but so can most other performance based factory cars. But what the **** do I know, right?

How is any DSM better than an EVO?

EVOs have everything DSMs have, but also have half decent reliability and can handle. I've personally seen 2 DSMs flat-bedded into TurboTriz one afternoon while I was getting some welding done. The DSM guy I rode down with through a rod bearing on the dyno. They are just fast POS's to me.

Ok wgknestrick, first of all John Shepards talon would smoke any evo on its bad day. U think dsm's are pos. If your car was atleast 12 years old or older and was treated like **** for most of those years wouldn't yours break down to?

But u are entitled to your own opinion

I don't really see your argument here. A single car that is FAR, FAR, FAR from stock and only drag raced means nothing. (Don't forget there are plenty of older EVOs in the 8s & 9s too, which I don't consider very slow) DSMs have their reputation because they have earned it all themselves, bad owners or not.

All these people are trying to make points, but it's kind of hard to try to prove a point against something you don't own.

I use John Shepards car to make a piont. How many evo's do u see running 7's. Not that evo's aren't fast cars. Lets see how reliable evo's are in 10 years when there cheap as hell and been beaten to death. And why do u think that in such a short time the evo's are diping into the 9's and 8's, because they have a very very similar motor to the dsm's.

It all comes down to the owner, or the person who maintains the car. My experience with DSM's have been great. Ive owned my GSX for 6 years now and its never once gave me anykind of problem. The main problems with DSM's is the fact that they are hard to work on. If you can figure out how to work on them, your as good as gold. Most dsm's you see out there are so hacked up because of some KID that wanted a turbo car, and had absolutely NO idea what he or she was doing. Me on the other hand worked at a shop for 5 years and know about cars. I admit DSM's are complicated sometimes, you just gotta take your time to figure out how this particular car functions. Personally Ive owned atleast 10-13 DSM's and I dont find them UNreliable, like I said it depends how the car was previously taken care of.

And EVILTALON, good lookin out by stickin up for what we love, most of these people arguing about how DSM's are unreliable have never even owned one. They just heard stories from people who dont know a thing about what they own.
