i learned recently about a couple different ways to get super close.

if you already have a macro, you could add extension tubes to get closer. or you could add closeup filters, but i dont love those because they're putting more thick glass between the subject and the sensor, possibly compromising image quality. maybe they have some really high quality closeup filters out there to avoid that though.

another option is this reversal ring which you use with a 50 or wider, and you can see my results above. drawbacks here are:
i have to be a set distance away (very very close) for the image to be in focus, the focus ring does not affect focusing distance.
the adapter is made for a lens that takes a 52mm filter, so if yours is bigger you'll need another adapter.
you need a lens that has an aperture ring because it needs to be adjusted manually. open it up to compose and focus, then close it down to shoot.
there is no in camera metering so you need a meter, or you need to guess.

the last option i know of is to stack lenses... take a zoom lens or any longer lens mounted on the camera normally, then get a male-male adapter ring and reverse a 50mm (or similar) on the end of it. this allows you to focus and meter through the camera, set exposure through the camera, everything you would as normal. provides more magnification than a normal reversed 50mm by using the zoom lens as well. it does create a hell of a vignette in the image that would need to be cropped out, but thats the only drawback i believe. if i had done this i would have needed a 52-62 adapter ring, a 62-77 adapter ring, and a male-male ring in there somewhere.

ok so there it is... let me know if anyone else decides to try this out...

I sold my extension tubes with my old d50 set up. They worked very well with a 300mm. I never thought of keeping them for use with my macro lens. time to rebuy equipment

i figured id give this a shot just holding my lens up backwards. it would def help if i had a lens i could choose the aperture on the lense
all straight outta the camera, just resized on photobucket

with the 18-55

and reversed at 18

and heres one with my 50mm held up backwards

nicely done... i knew it could be done by holding the lens backwards but i'm impressed that you got sharp images that way because there are so many things to worry about.

yup, i outlined the way it works above but basically its a simple adapter that is a nikon lens mount on one side and just a 52mm thread on the other... so the one side attaches to the camera and the other side attaches to the front filter threads of a lens .

Well...the swastika is a very old symbol that has a lot to do with the Hindu culture. But....I have no clue.

Bri, do you have links to any of these rings? I was actually looking into getting the step up rings last time I was at Calumet. So I can use my larger filters on my ne 50mm.

I took this one with my canon IS700. I was just chilling on the balcony and thought I saw someone in space. What a shot.

Troll, Looks like a pretty nice setup without having to get a true macro lense.

YellowMSP: So you litterally held your lense uo to your camera body backwards without mounting it (I assume) in order to achieve those images?

This is some intuitive thinking. I purchased one of those macro lens adaptors, it's basically huge lens that you screw on to the end of your zoom or stock lens. It works pretty well except for a lot of the blue and purple fringeing, and when fully zoomed out there is a definite black ring around the subject. (check my avatar) Part of the problem I've experienced (which i think is due to my stock 18-55 lens) is that I can't focus in if I am physically too close? I'm gonna try and hold my lens up backwards, like Yellow MSP and see what I can get.
