things went relatively smoothly, we just spent a lot of time trying to work the tranny off of the engine... knew it would be a bit of a struggle but it took longer than anyone expected. We finally got it off and were working on getting the 6 speed on teh car when I really had to get going. Everyone volunteered to stay and see the job through so although it sucks I had to leave thats awesome of everyone.
BIG thanks to Greg (04 Turbo Spec) for the use of his garage and lift, and for sticking around all day and helping out... and thanks to his little brother too... not too many 16 year olds know their way around cars like he does (whats his name again?). And of course Mike (the mike)... you rock and I really appreciate you taking the time on your day off to help me through this one. Oh, and of course Mike (PoolMike) stopped by as well and helped us with the daunting task of separating the tranny and motor, that guy can't resist a good challenage on an install.
I talked to them a short while ago and they said they had the tranny on and were working on putting the starter and slave cylinder back on, then comes the driveshaft, exhaust, and intercooler piping. I tried to take photos throughout the day so I'll post them up tonight or tomorrow...
Damn no thanks towards the moral support man ouch.

and barry gave me a ride which i really needed. he roxors my soxors.

greg and his brother, and mike stayed real late to finish the job cause they're goddamn champs... i have a few things to go over tomorrow but i think things are good.

i do have a leak somewhere though, a quite amusing one... as soon as i start to build positive pressure it sounds like one of those plastic kid toy zippy whistles is going off, this is kinda what it sounds like: http://www.audiosparx.com/sa/play/po...und_iid.165235
i really wasnt able to go over the car at all tonight because it was so late, but i'm confident that i'll be able to ID it tomorrow when I give the car a better look over.
this concludes our install session. photos tomorrow...

Yeh, seriously Troll. If it wasn't for B- standing there in his pink flip-flops, telling you to things like 'try threading the doodicky onto the thingamabob', you would all still be standing there scratching your a$$es, wondering how to complete the swap

Congrats on the new tranny, Troll. Now you shouldn't have to worry about the glass 2nd gear of the stock WRX trans. Can't wait to see that thing run. Are you going to run it at Fall Nationals this year?

I was only there for a short time, but the swap looked like any other trans swap....simple in theory but a pain in the a$$ in reality. I would not attempt it without a lift.

Yeah, unless you have a lift, you are screwed. Even then it's a PITA. The 6 speed absolutely dwarves the 5 speed. it is a heavy bugger. Heavier than some automatics I have done.
And you really need to jack the front of the motor up to angle the rear down, the tranny is ust too big to get into position without doing that. The top of the trans hits the tunnel and you CAN NOT get the trans onto the guide studs or the input shaft aligned without doing it.
Other than that it's pretty sraight forward. Struggle to separate the old one, struggle to install the new one.
The noises that car made that night were priceless though.
Electrically, it is "plug and play". Kind of.
The older chassis(non STi) don't have a plu for the center diff controller. And apparently you have to swap over some sensors so the reverse lights work, but other than that most of the wiring is the same.

Just make sure you don't have to work that day.
