I haven't been there in about 5 years but it is definitely a fun way to kill a day if you go in an SUV. Is there still shotgun shells littering the ground where the fire started? There had to have been a thousand empties on the ground the last time I was there.

Shot gun shells are everywhere up there. I'm sure people go there at night and just unload...

wow

I havent been up there in YEARS... I have been going to Knoebels since I was a little kid, and I have been to Centralia numerous times growing up. It is an awesome place to visit!

My family has a travel trailer seasonal in shartlesville, PA, so I am up there every so often. Thats not too far from all of the stuff mentioned here

Here are some fire photos I found at the surface. THIS is what I have been looking for in Centralia. It seems like these are old photos and I have yet to find any surface fire in the past 6 years.

This set of images were taken by Steve McGinley:

I've been to this area myself and unfortunately it seems like the surface fire has returned to the depths below... As you can see, my photos aren't nearly as interesting:

Ya there have not been any fires up there in years......its all smoke and coal fire out-gassing. I would assume the upper levels of coal are bunt off by now since fire wants to climb more then descend. Along with any tree/roots that were close could have caught have since burnt up along time ago.

Supposedly if you spend too much time up there you will end up like this guy, and your skin will not fall off but it really wont be attached either!!!

What ever you do just avoid the Subterranean Mine People

Seems like they may be trying to extinguish the fire is the state provides funding. Story here:
