He is anything but below average. Is he a stanley cup winning goal, Possibly! He needs to work on his mechanics and that 5 hole. He is always square to the shooter and his anticipation is great. Yeah the goal he let in was soft and probably just a stupid mistake. But o well, if the d would have stepped up a couple games maybe it would have gone 7 games. See everyone is forgetting that we played four d men the whole series, that equals a very tired d pairing. What we really need is to get a 5th and 6th dman back there that can actually play defense. Get rid of carter, get Lieghton as a Back up and trade boosh. There is a couple good goalies out there but they come with a heavy price tag.
People really need to stop bashing Lieghton though there is no reason to harp on this guy for one goal he let in. I didnt hear anyone saying during the playoff run and his shutouts that he is weak and shat like that. You win as a team and lose as a team. The team lost the cup, we will be there again next year, and we will raise that cup.
Great seasons Flyers, made me proud to be a fan.

LETS GO FLYERS!!!!!

I am not saying that he is weak because of the last goal of the cup...I have said all along that he is weak. He has good positioning and anticipation as you said, BUT he just doesnt make the saves he has to make if he wanted to be a starter. I agree with you that we need to let go of Boosh and keep Leighton as a backup. Leighton was made and broken by the play of the defense solely. When the defense played well, he looked like a god...when the defense played bad, he looked like crap. A good starting goalie stands out most when his defense isnt playing well and he still makes the saves and keeps his team in the game. Leighton doesnt stand out to me as an above average goaltender...and wouldnt even if we won the cup this season. He is a great option as a backup and I will even say that we owe him that, BUT we need to get a quality starting goaltender at a reasonable price.

I know people see everything that Leighton did as great (because it was), but I dont think anyone can honestly say that he is the best option for our starting goaltender next season.

Leighton for backup goalie 2010-2011!!!

True I believe that he is the best option we have for a back up goal tender. I just dont think he deserves all this blame that people are putting on this guy. Hopefully homer will make some amazing trades and acquisitions like he always seems to do this off season,

Soft goals go in when you allow 40+ shots plain and simple.

Not exactly sure how carter doesn't fit into the speed catagory? And getting rid of a proven 40 goal scorer probably isn't the best idea.

If the flyers defense would have played more consistent throughout the season, then in the playoffs they would have been that much better.
It boiled down to this, the if the star defensement have a bad game, no one else steps up. A few years ago, Smith and timmonen needed to be 200%, or the other defensemen would fall on their face, and its the same this year, its pronger and timonen wern't 200%, carle and coburn could not keep up. Those two need to get their head out of their asses, and play consistent hockey to live up to their hype, not brilliant to crap in a span of a game. The star defensemen are allowed to have a bad game, unfortunatly, theres no one else there to pick up the slack.
