South Jersey, I believe Josh Lowell can/has/might weld diffs - usually he does S-Chassis stuff.

If you're willing to cross the bridge, Nick at Elite JDM also welds them up too.

In all reality anyone with a proper welder and some skill can weld a diff for you. Just make sure that you pre-heat the spider gears and carrier before welding to get proper penetration.

The three welded diffs I've gotten have all been welded here:

I've found this method is a bit more prone to breaking when the welds don't properly penetrate than this method (gears welded to each other and then the carrier):

Out of curiosity, what car is it going in?

his talon

and with all of his torque im betting he needs a pretty solid weld.

yea like chris said, my talon finally blew the trans apart Went to launch, it wheel hopped a little and that was all she wrote for my amazingly shifting trans that I have had in the car for over 4 years, cracked the case and everything

I just got another used AWD trans for 250, just took it apart to pull out the center diff to get welded so I can avoid this type of catastrophic failure again in the future. It sucks though its gonna make it a bitch to drive with no powersteering and a heavy ass ACT2900. But I guess its all just a part of going fast

Maybe I will hit up elite JDM if I cant source an already welded diff for a decent price, That guy at Elite does he preheat it before he welds it? Reason for the preheating isn't to get good penetration, it is because the gears are heat treated and if you just start welding on them without slowly preheating them, you heatshock the gears and it compromises strength in the long run.

Why can I buy a full size school bus cheaper and with less miles than a 240?

Because the school district pays the drift tax on the buss, homie. Get up on your local legislative banter.

I must be mis-informed on the reason for heating then, I was always told that diffs were pre-heated to allow the weld to properly penetrate the base material because it required a higher melting temperature than the filler.

In any case, I believe Nick pre-heats his differentials prior to welding, and if not, I'm sure he'd be willing to modify his process to do yours - I'd suggest contacting him directly.

I guess another solution, considering the uniqueness of your application would be to go to a drag shop and have them do it - they're probably better suited to welding the diff of a 'high' (relative term) power drag car than Nick may be.

Curiosity: does anyone make spools for DSM center diffs? One would imagine that the center diff would be a common failure point on 'high' (relative term) DSM's.

Diffs are one of the most neglected part on any DSM. The stock engine/trans/drivetrain/rear on a DSM holds up so well to whatever you throw at it, and before you know it your car's power is literally overwhelming parts. Expensive parts.

It probably doesn't help that most 'high' power DSM's are also designed to hook. At that point, your power transmission stuff is what sees all of the shock loading that results from AWD and 'high' power. An Engine Rarely cares that you've just dropped the clutch at 9 billion million RPM, but your axles/diff(s)/driveshaft sure do.

i think you can state 'high' tq/hp for any car relative to what its trans is produced to withstand. its safe to say alex is over that... alex are you gona weld the diff in the 3kgt as well?

Not necessarily. When I use the term 'high', I usually refer to the 50th percentile range - though it depends on a car.

Like anything over 350hp is considered to be a 'high' horsepower 240sx, but the transmissions are capable of holding 400hp or so.

I dont think I will weld the diff on the 3K since it isnt really a common failure point on those cars. It is such a pig that I dont even think its possible to wheel hop a 3S.

I think the only upgrade is "welded" and upgrade from a 2spider diff (stock) to a 4 spider diff, but even those are able to blow up as well, but they are capable of holding a lot more power. I just want the most bullet proof set up there is, I was looking at straight cuts, but the 5000+ price tag for the gearset alone makes my pockets cringe lol
