Fire Creek Restaraunt in Downingtown, PA

Anyone else eat there on opening night last night? I'm sure people from the area have seen it during its construction phases, well, they are finally open.

Jul and I ate there last night and I must say, it sure was good. We got Calamari for an appetizer and then I ordered Swordfish, both of which were excellent. They were also giving two free drinks from the bar since it was their opening night and I enjoyed a brewski with the appetizer and a nice glass of white wine with my entree, on the house.

Unfortunately for Jul the menu did not say they salt and peppered just about everything and she hates pepper, so her meal was unintentionally ruined. They did offer to prepare another entree for her, less the pepper, but she refused; Instead they took her order off the bill and gave us a free desert. Ended up with a 7 layer chocolate hazelnut cake which was delicious.

Other then that, and the pricing which was a bit on the steep side (for my meal and appetizer it was almost $40), it was a nice place and I would definitely go again.

B.S. They gave YOU a free desert. If I recall I didn't eat anything except a forkful of mashed potatoes and enough of a piece of fish to realize how covered in pepper it was. TURRIBLE.

Other than that, the place was nice, menu seemed good - just wish they would warn you that they use a ridiculous amount of pepper on EVERYTHING. Including my green beans.

And don't make me out to be some snobby bish, I told you I didn't want anything else because I couldn't get the taste of pepper out of my mouth.

not to sound like an ass but goddamnit im so sick of seeing calamari on menus. ****ing 1995 called and they want their app back. let me guess there was a flourless chocolate torte on their dessert menu.. better yet at night it become a martini bar.. aaaaaahhh

/rant

seriously though, nice to see people still going out and enjoying restaurants even in this economy. as for your experience, salt and pepper are basic basic basic seasonings, but its nice to see they did right by you. its very tough to get a kitchen in sync that first few days, but obviously they have some intelligent enough people over there to realize buying you dessert ect is the right move.

trust me, there are plenty of cooks that over-pepper things to the point where tasting the food is impossible. it's a huge pain in the ass and i wish i could fire every cook that has ever done that. its uncalled for and a terrible mistake.

Me too. I literally hate the taste/sight/smell of pepper. The fish was literally covered in it. The fish was made with almond butter sauce. Why ruin such a delicate sauce with gobs of pepper? I will never understand. Why drench fish in salt, too? I wonder if they're covering the fact that the fish isn't top notch.

It's annoying because I wouldn't have minded asking for "no pepper and salt, please" if they had warned you on the menu. But no indication whatsoever. They had one of those retarded "abstract" menus. Y'know.. like

Almond butter trout + apple wood smoked bacon hash + beans

Yeah, I do see calamari really frequently! I'm kind of glad though because I honestly love calamari, haha. No torte though, they had some okay sounding deserts. But of course they had creme brulee, whatta surprise!

And I agree, salt and pepper are basic seasonings but they should be added to "taste" not to drench and drown out any other tastes. Literally I could taste nothing BUT pepper. Couldn't even tell I had just tasted fish.

But yeah their drink special worked out for Brandon, haha. It was two free beers, two cocktails or two glasses of wine, or a combination thereof.

I'd be willing to go back.. I'd just have to remember to say hold the f'ing salt and pepper preeeease

they shouldnt be "warning" anybody on a menu about the excess amount of pepper on a dish. its simply inexcusable to serve a dish with that amount of pepper on it. any self respecting cook knows this and for a place to be charging what seems like a decent amount for this food is just absurd. i'd never eat there.

B.S. the fish looked like it was spotted. And to make it worse it was cracked black pepper instead of ground black pepper. So, less flakes but bigger chunks. Yuckles.

I tasted your fish (lolololol) and it wasn't bad (lolololololol) its just the fact that you "hate" pepper.

My point exactly? If you like pepper, you're not going to mind the excessive amount of pepper. If you don't like pepper, you're going to mind the excessive amount of pepper. If you really hate pepper, like me, you're going to hate any pepper at all.

Interesting, I live like 3 blocks from this place. They have been building it for like 2 years but I guess its finally open.

Hopefully it won't meet the fate that most Downingtown businesses meet.

Coming from someone who doesn't use pepper trust me when I say there wasn't an "intense" amount of pepper, it was normally seasoned.
