Cops enter wrong house?

My girlfriend lives right down the road from me and I looked out the window and seen 5 cop cars pull up. They go up to her house and walk right in. Her dog goes nuts barking and her parents walk to the living room and the cop ask, is this the wrong house and ask the address? Her dad says yes and they walk right back out and go next door. The house next door is a grandmother and a young kid about 18. They come back out and have the kid in cuffs and put him in the back of 1 of the cars. As far as we know is it was a domestic.

Now im NOT asking is there any legal action my gf parents can take, i'm not attacking the police in anyway. Im asking can they just walk into a house (The right house)? Does it require a warrent and if so, if they had it for the wrong house does that let the kid off scott free? I dont know the kid that got arrested im just curious.

OK this is a big question and there is a long answer that I could spend pages writing about.

But I won't. Yes the Police can just walk right in to stop a crime in progress or if they believe someones life is in danger.

They don't have to wait at the door till he's done chopping Gandma up in the tub before they can enter and a warrant is not needed since they ether know or believe there ia an urgent situation or emergency at that location.

I just got more detailed info about this. The cops actually walked past the kid they wanted to lock up. He was trying to get into a car in front of his house while the alarm was going off.

The cops were called because the kid punched his aunt in the back of the head. Im happy the kid finally got locked up but then I seen him about 5 hours later going back to his house.

But thanks for the reply, makes perfectly good sense the way you put it. I just figured the reason the cops were called out would make them at least knock or annouce they were coming in. When they walked in my gf's house all they said was woah woah woah to the dog barking at them until my gf's dad walked into the room.
