electric bills

i'm trying to get some rough estimates as to what everyones electric bill (with elecric heat) is and the square footage of their home/apt. My gf's electric bill seems double what it should be. Especially since she pays the same as another tenant that has an apt. twice the size of hers.

She is paying $100 for about 500sq ft apt. supposedly she uses 696kwh.

does she live in philly? My house is about 3000 sq ft. My electric bill is less than 150 per month but I also have gas heat. But in the summer it is about 225 per month with the AC on. So her bill does seem high...

no she lives in yardley and is the service is provided by PECO. That part that makes me very curious is how she could use the same or about the same KWH as the other tenant which has an apt. twice the size of hers?

does she leave things on? such as falling asleep with the tv on...you should check to make sure she's not paying for part of another apt too. one of my mom's friends got her bill and realized she was paying for her neighbor

also take into consideration what she has her thermostat set on. if its set on 75, her heat will be on alot

no shes not a high maintenance girl, she does blow dry her hair in the am but thats all. She is very conservative and doesn't leave lights on in other rooms, never falls alseep with the tv or anything on. She's also had her heat set pretty low 65. The one thing i asked her was if she turned her heat totally off when she left of just a little lower, and she was turning it all the way off. So we are gonna just lowering it like 5-10 degrees when she isn't there, hopefully it will use less energy since it's won't have to re-heat an entire space and just maintain it. I'm also going to seal her windows better to cut out any draft. I looked at some past bills for the apt. and the other tenants apt. and what I found odd is that PECO charges all of them 600KWH and then and additional #KWH that they actually used?
For instance:
Transmission fee 600KWH x $
Trasnmission fee 96KWH x $

There are 8 line items total 4 @ 600KWH and 4@ 96KWH?

So I nee to find out what this 600KWH charge is and why everyone is getting charged that same amount in addition to the usage?
Does anyone using peco have a bill handy they can look at to see if they have a 600KWH charge?

Check with PECO about some $$$ discounts. Usually if the heat, hot water, and cooking sources are electric...there are some discounts available.

My wife and I spend ~$150-200/month for our small house. We have changed every regularly used bulb to flouresent or LED, we heat with a woodstove. My garage is the biggest power consuming area with lights on, compressor running, and the arc welder buzzin'

yea she has sort of the same deal she is charged the 600KWH x 4 $ amounts. and thenalso charged for the 96KWH x 4 $ amounts. But every tenant has the same 600KWH charge? regardless of the actual usage? I can't get a straight answer from PECO on it either. I was told once that, that was just the fee for the service, then another person from PECO said it was because there was a shared water heater for all the tenants? which neither make an sense to me? 1800KWH for a hot water heater? let alone it's the same 600KWH every month since 05? Pre-05' there was only the usage charge, no additional 600KWH charge?

It seems like there is something more fishy going on. Call a local news channel. They eat this stuff up.

My next house will have some land with it so I can run a big ol' generator on veggie oil. PECO Their regular charges are one thing. Then, like Matt says, there are the transition/transmission charges, the ever increasing state tax (thanks ED), and the wonderful 'wind power surcharge' UNBELIEVABLE

I think Peco is pulling some ****, too.

My sister and I live in an old Victorian house, three floors, with each floor converted into an apartment. We live in the second floor, two bedroom apartment. Not sure of the exact footage, but it's a decent size.

For the first two months we had the place, neither of us lived here, and the Peco bill was still $40.

Once it started getting 'cold', we set the heat to roughly 68 degrees. That was in .. mid October, I believe.

Since then, our bills have been going up, but for no apparent reason since we haven't changed any of our habits. It went from $85 in October, to $136 in November, and I just paid December's bill for over $180. WTF?
