take the advice already given and get to know your camera... HDR is something to play with as you begin some experience... I have been shooting for several years and I still haven't tried HDR as it doesnt apply to sports photography and macro as well as it does to car photography.

telling him not to get photoshop is just silly. having photoshop is not going to make him a better photography but there are always occasions where some editing is needed and/or preferred to get a desired look that you simply cannot get using the camera. that would be like telling a film photographer to put away the tools in the dark room. just silly.

the point i was trying to make is that you need to know how to take a picture before you can edit one..

yes i agree but it appears as if the OP thought that photoshop will make his photography better, rather it is only to enhance it...

Both of those photos could be made to look better in Photoshop, or at color corrected. Now wither or not it's worth the effort is another question. He's just trying to see what the camera can do, he'll learn eventually. Photoshop is a friend not a foe for any photographer.

agreed, no one will take good pictures when they start out...

my pictures looked like crap when I first started, but you get better by trying and experimenting more... But I would focus on experimenting more with the shooting than the editing... i think the actual composition is primary, followed by a good ability to enhance/"make to look better" in photoshop...

I think the OP is headed in a positive direction...

I'm leaving for Iraq in a few weeks and I got this camera because I didn't want to deal with sand + an SLR. So I got a sealed lense camera. I just wanted to mess around with different shutter speeds and see how the camera works.

I never said I thought that photo shop would fix any of my photos. But keep in mind It was my first time having a camera in my hands that is anything above your basic point and shoot. and I was using a trash can as a tripod. Today I have a tripod and I've learned a lot about the how to use the camera just by messing with it for about an hour last night. So hopefully I can get some pretty good RAW (no editing pictures today/tonight). I'll post up if I get one worth sharing.

what kind of camera did you get?

I got a Finepix S1000FD Just above a basic point and shoot but I needed something that was sealed from the sand.

I tried again today. Let me know what you think.

This was three exposures with a tripod.

good... whats up with the sky? overcast day?

yea it was over cast. I took the advise and tried to work on getting good pictures straight out of the camera. It let to a much better final product.

There was clear blue sky behind the camera I like how that shows up in the reflection on the windows.

in a way it appears as if your picture is taken during a sandstorm...

but if you had blue skies it would have looked better

a brighter sky would have helped but at the same time the sky in the glass is pretty hot. What might have helped was waiting a little bit for the blue sky to get closer to where you were so the sky would appear lighter. (if that was possible of course)

If I waited any longer if would have been sweet shot of an empty field. But yea I was atleast hoping the clouds what start to break up alittle.
