custom rollcages?

looking for a custom or just a weld in roll cage for around 1000.wondering who in the area does them.has to pass safety inspections,and im in nj. its for an
s13 coupe

I'd look into JMF on here but don't expect it to be cheap. Theirs also a few other very capable vendors on here to do the job (GVauto, natedog, epictuning [don't quote me])

full cage material is close to 1000 dollars.

If you're looking to get one done for less that $1000 then you're really limiting your options.

You could go with something pre-bent and off the shelf like an S&W and find someone to weld it in for you, but the fitment isn't the greatest. Or, you could see if you have some friends that could help you out and do it on the cheap.

But, what are you building the car for? If it's a drift car and you want a cage built by a reputable builder and something that fits well and is legal all the way up to FD then look at Groundwerks. They did the cage for my friends car and it turned out pretty well. I think their cage prices start somewhere around $1200-$1500.

Depends on how many point, what material, and who is doing it. Someone with a good tig and the knowhow to do it right is gonna cost. Material and labor should run 2000+

Cage work isnt exactly something to cheap out in, if down the road you get hurt because you saved a few hundred dollars on a cage you'll regret it. As well as if your car wont past tech because the builder didnt know what they were doing.

S&w makes a kit for around 700.good parts and they have been around forever.I figured someone locally could make a good quality cage for around 1000$.

Lots of people do. You threw out some arbitrary low price with no info so I assumed it was for looking cool. Cheaping out on safety equipment is a dumb move. Find a fabricator with lots of experience and (preferable one who's work has been "tested" (crashed) so you can see the results) and pay whatever he charges.

Have you done any reading on roll cages in street cars? Are you willing to live with the added risk on the street?

Added risk? And b rad can do it for less then 3gs..so does that mean its not going to be good?

Where did I EVER say it has to be 3 grand or more to be good? I have no idea if he can build a good cage. I know he did one for my friends car but I have yet to see it in person. Even if I did I'm no expert so I wouldn't be able to say.

Clearly you've done zero research. What do you think happens in a crash with a roll cage when you're not wearing a helmet? If your answer is "potentially smack your head against it and die", you'd be correct.

u said 1000$ is low.and actually I have done research.not every shop in the area has a website.that's why I started this thread.I don't know evrything and I don't know evryshop in the tristate area.I work full time and don't have time to sit at my computor for hours researching shops.

Also you can go to the shop and check out their work, they have 2 cages in s13's there and working on an FC at the moment.

If this is Leon, I just spoke to you :-).

The S&W cages are good, but not the best cages we have come across. The main hoops aren't the tightest.

As I tell everyone, whereever you goto get cage work done, make sure the cages are built to spec. Tubular sizing, Proper welds, proper design is the key.

Make sure anyone you speak to knows the rules and regulations for that specific cage.

D1 Spec is different than Formula D. even though they are both sanctioned drifting, they are still different rules.

Make sure the shop has a certified fabricator, and also has credentials from a sanctioning body.

We are a certified tech center in the North East for NASA spec racing.

I have had customer's come in from other shop's looking to pass tech.

All I can do is give you an example;

Older gentleman has an s2k with over 100k into it.
Got a cage done at a popular shop in NJ.
Wanted to get into road racing and get tech'd.

We had to fail the customer on his cage.
Bars were too thin
No boxes were made as the cage was welded to the floor and rusting through the bottom
His hard top did not fit when he tried to install it because the cage was too high
His dash did not fit because the forward downward bars were too close inward.

After 7k in cage work, we failed him and told him to have the shop remake the cage, or reimburse you and take it elsewhere.



If you look closely, here's a bolt on cage at it's finest. Right through the floor.

I know I'm opening a can of worms here, but there are some excusable reasons to use a bolt-in cage, like using steel tubing and trying to put it in a car with an aluminuim shell, or certain events like Auto-x where the the chances of flipping are minimal and the performance gain from increased chasis rigidness is up there.

bolt ins really aren't worth the money because its made so that anyone can throw it in so the fitment is sloppy and it never will be as strong as a weld in cage. if you are going the cage route always weld in.
