Guys, if you dont have a flash, GET ONE! you do not need to get the fancy 400 dollar flashes. ive been using an offbrand listed in my sig. it was only 150, but opened up photography to no extent. with only one flash, ive learned to do SO MUCH with it. the possibilities really become endless. the more flashes, the more you can do.

I haven't fiddled with flash much. What can it do for a photo? Do you have an examples of with and without that "make or break" a photo?

Flash can really do wonders with lighting on subjects and capturing something you would never be able to before....

ill be picking one up soon maybe and ebay one to start?

yeah, i got this hand me down external flash from my dad, and, i'm still learning how set my camera to it. these 2 were done with a external flash. not the best examples, but, like i said, still learning here:

i am very interested in a bit of info on flashes. How is the built-in flash different than others? Every single time i use flash, the pictures come out over exposed. This is the best picture i have got so far using the on-board flash of Canon T1i..

Flash made this photo...



It's perfectly exposed in both the foreground and background. I used the flash to fill in the details of the group of people while metering for the sunset in the distance. If I hadn't used a flash, the people and faces would have been completely dark and way underexposed.

This should could have used a similar flash setup to help expose the car more against the properly exposed background.

I know a good amount of flash stuff, but there are other people on here would could chime in a lot more about strobe setups and whatnot.

idk if i'd say that's perfectly exposed on the foreground and background. you did a good job bringing out the faces if you metered for the sunset, but your metering must have been off, because the sky is completely blown out above their heads.

it's jmo tho, so it doesnt really matter, but since your trying to help out others with this photo as an example, thats what i noticed to be wrong.

Higher f/stop as in?

as in aperture? the bigger the number the smaller the opening....so would make the picture darker but more in focus front to back..

as compared to a smaller f/stop the bigger the opening more bright picture blurred background

or lowering the the shutter speed would make the brighter more exposed hence a brighter image...

or a mixture of the two depending on what you were going for

I mean i know im pretty new but im pretty sure all the info is correct or ive been really going the wrong way here

I dont really like this photo THAT much, but i wouldnt be able to do this with a regular lamp, or atleast it would involve heavy editing


Here, i took a few minute exposure. if i didnt use my flash, i would have a lot of shadows and harsh undiffused light (from the moon). I ran around popping my flash to fill in those shadows making the subject pop among its scenery


Even when shooting in daylight, i use the flash. Flash helps fill in shadows and fill the image better

No, I know what aperture is and how it works.. You using the word "higher" threw me off.

Erik do you use an umbrella? or just bounce the flash off walls or space? like youre not suppose to directly put the external flash on the subject are you?

The only thing you got mixed up is the aperture info. Aperture is technically a fraction system, so 1/22, 1/16...1/2.8 etc. So it's actually opposite of what you said. The bigger the number (ie 1/2.8 for f2.8, a larger fraction) the larger the opening, and the smaller the number (ie 1/22 for f22) the smaller the opening.
