Frame Slidders

What is everybody's opinions on frame sliders? I know some people swear by them and other do not like them. Heard from some guys that they can cause more damage than good. The reason I ask is I am repainting my bike currently and wold hate to dump it this summer, which knowing my luck I'll be down the first day I ride it with my freshly painted fairings. Not sure if I like the look of them but it would definitely look better than scratched up or broken fairings.
