canoe and car law

recently, my girlfriend and i have been doing a lot of canoeing and to transport it we just tie a long rope around each end of the canoe and wind it through the car and i bungee the front end to the front bumper pretty tightly, and i use 2 bungees on the back end. it seems pretty secure to me but i was wondering what the PA law about this is, and if any special permits are needed. the canoe is pretty long and is about as long as her ford taurus from back bumper to front bumper.
