Sounds like just a way to nickle and dime in this recession.

It's like a slap in the face of those who honestly want better health and want to stop congesting the streets and the atmosphere by not driving and helping everyone. Such a shame.

when i was stationed in japan, we had to force people to "register" their bicycles with the base police. Not for if they got stolen, but, if they got abandoned when said person transfered. What we would do, is find out where they got sent to, them get their pay docked for however much it cost us to get rid of the bike properly. And, i've seen some really nice bicycles left behind, but, we weren't aloud to resell them or keep them for ourself.

and, if we saw someone riding a bicycle that was unregistered on base (when you registered with us, we slapped a bright orange serial number sticker on the bike), we would stop the person, and write thema ticket. yes, it was that stupid.

If I got a ticket riding my unregistered bike, I would wipe my ass with it and hand it back to the officer. Thats the most ridiculous thing I've heard.

They used to do this up at PSU. The police would give you **** non-stop about having an unregistered bike. Their reasoning was that bikes constantly got left all over the place, or stolen and dropped a few block away.

You have to register a bike in New Orleans if its your main source of transportation. So not surprised.

Bikes are a hazard to cars and othe people walking down the street. I'm all for it. Its still cheaper then a car. I pay tax to drive on the road, you can pay to ride you bike too.

Seems logical to me. I can't count how many times I almost hit a dumb **** on a bicycle that runs a red light.

lol Bikes are hazard to cars and people walking down the street? Take a minute to think about that statement. The problem is that people are too stupid to pay attention while they drive and obey the traffic laws. And if someone gets hit by a bike while walking in the street it's their fault for not using a sidewalk or crosswalk. I'm not saying all people on bikes are safe and courteous but I'm sure someone riding a bike is paying a lot more attention to what they're doing than someone driving a car is.
And if we're going to charge people to bike down the road what about skateboarding, rollerblading, walking, jogging.. etc? The money you pay to register your car is suppose to help maintain the roads due to the damage that your car does to them. So what kind of damage is my bike doing? If they wanted to use the registration fee to make more roads with bike lanes I'd be fine with it but I'm not going to be a fundraiser for the city because I put out 0 emissions 90% of the year and have the motivation to get off my ass a do a little physical activity.

This kind of makes me laugh because of the outrageous number of cars I see running red lights everyday without any repercussion. There's no denying that it's stupid to go through a red light without making sure no cars are coming but when I'm at an intersection with no cars around I'm not going to wait for the light to turn green. And please don't tell me that a car could pop up out of nowhere because the one way roads I bike down everyday don't allow for that kind of surprise.

I think there is an equal percent of dumb car drivers as dumb bike riders.

See bike laws in Philadelphia:
Section 3501. Applicability of traffic laws to pedalcycles.
(a) General rule. -- Every person riding a pedalcycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle by this title, except as to special provisions in this subchapter and except as to those provisions of this title which by their nature can have no application.

Section 3508. Pedalcycles on sidewalks and pedalcycle paths.
(a) Right-of-way to pedestrians.-- A person riding a pedalcycle upon a sidewalk or pedalcycle path used by pedestrians shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give an audible signal before overtaking and passing a pedestrian.
(b) Business districts.-- A person shall not ride a pedalcycle upon a sidewalk in a business district unless permitted by official traffic-control devices, nor when a usable pedalcycle-only lane has been provided adjacent to the sidewalk.

people should be walking in the street. people cross the street when they arent suppose to all the time.

cars are a hazard to bikes.

i bet your one of those people who honk behind me while im riding my bike telling me to get on the sidewalk, cut me off, then hit a red light while i pass right through it.
