So how many people...

park their manual transmissions the "right" way?

The "how do you shift" thread came to mind when I was parking my car the other day and I thought to myself...I wonder.

I vaguely remember when I was first pursuing a 5-speed that people said when you park, you should only leave it in first or reverse, depending on what direction the car was facing on a slant, etc. etc. and to never park with the ebrake up. My guess is in case it seizes.

Well, I know if I'm parked on even a slight incline I just throw it in first or reverse, and I only use the e-brake if its a major hill or its pretty much level ground.

How about you?

E-brake always (unless its really cold out)

Uphill leave it in first, downhill in reverse.

Always turn the wheel too so if either mechanism fails or the car will roll and hit the curb instead of rolling into traffic/the car behind/in front of it.

if flat, usually neutral and e-brake up. Incline is either first-ebrake or reverse-ebrake, depending on what direction the car is facing.

1st gear and ebrake. always. Even on e steep hill, i dont think it matters 1st or reverse, cuz gravity wont produce enough force to move the drivetrain.

false.

1st gear when the hill would make the car go backwards so that the gears hold it

reverse when the hill would make the car go forward so the gears hold it.
