Quitting Smoking?

Tried to find a similar thread to no avail.

Alright, so I first tried smoking in 7th grade because my friend stole a pack of Korean cigarettes from her dad and we were bored. So we hid in my basement and tried one. I picked up smoking for a while in 8th grade, but it didn't last long. Then my boyfriend in 10th grade was a smoker, I tried it one day, and haven't been able to really stop since. I quit once for 2 months, and then I quit again this summer for 6 weeks. After a week of upset stomachs and migraines, it's no longer physical but rather mental. I use cigarettes as a time waster.

for instance..
I wake up, I smoke.
I take the dogs out, I smoke.
I take the dogs for a walk, I smoke.
I'm in my car, I smoke.
I have to sit around and wait, I smoke.
I get stressed, I smoke.
I eat, I smoke.

So it's not so much that I can't do it, it's just that I almost doesn't WANT to quit because smoking fills the blanks in my days, haha.

ANYWAY, I'm going to try and quit, again, because it's better for my health and stuffs..

Has anyone else ever successfully quit, or is in the process of quitting? How long have you been smoke free since? Did you go cold turkey, use gum/patches, use those nifty fake cigarette quitting thingies, go to a hypnotist, go on meds? AND, anyone else want to try and quit with me this winter?

Here's a good idea-
everyone who wants to quit to put $100 bucks into a pool. the person who stops smoking the longest wins it.

I had two friends who waged $1000 bucks and the winner of that also happened to stop smoking forever.

a guy i used to work for used to smoke a lot. he tried to quit, and i think it worked, was to chew gum and smoke a cigarette at the same time. he said that the gum eventually tasted like the smoke, and it forced him not to smoke any more.

I was doing a pack a day, and about 6 months ago I decided to quit cold turkey.. just put my mind to it, and did it.

and about 3 months ago, I made a conscious decision to smoke only when I drink because I thought it was more reasonable and, for me, the good outweighs the bad of just smoking when I drink..

but since I've quit smoking sober 6 months ago, I haven't had a single cigarette if I don't have a beer in my hand..

rather than 7-10 packs a week, I only go through less than one pack a week..

I agree with the above when they say find something else to "fill the blanks". My uncle used to eat Jelly Beans. My friend said you just have to keep your mind and smoking hand busy. It's a habit for a reason so make a new habit that isn't smoking lol.

It's hard from what I've seen. Just tell your friends you are tryin to quit too. Hopefully they will help you keep your mind off of it. Good luck Julz. I have massive respect for people that actually TRY to quit.

same here, julz. regardless of where i am or who i'm with someone smokes and its so hard to sit there and say "no, i'm not going to smoke" when you smell it or see it.

i dont think most people WANT to smoke. i think it becomes a habit thats very difficult to break. its proven that smoking is addictive, as many things are.
the best way to quit is to know in your mind you HAVE to quit.

like dan's said throught this whole thing.. find a lifetime goal, something that wont disappear... and look towards that. find a way to tie that in with quitting.

completely agreed. you need to want to quit more than you want to smoke.

as everyone already knows, i smoke. i've been smoking for years. currently, i have no desire to quit. but i support anyone who does. for me, i need to find something that gives me a valid reason to quit. someone i love wanting me to stop, having a child, something life changing.
until then i'll be stupid, because yes, i know smoking is stupid.
maybe i'll fall out of the habit, because i've been smoking a lot less.
i've literally been getting bored of it.
but things are different for everyone.

julz, the main thing is, is finding something that can keep your mind focused. you shouldnt need to get rid of your smoking friends, or stay away from the smell of smoke... your will should be strong enough to direct you away from cigarettes even around that.

my dad smoked for 35 years and he finally quit because when he married my mom, she asked him to stop. but when he is under a lot of stress, he'll smoke. he used to deny the fact that he still smoked until recently, when he even offered me a cigarette while we were talking outside. but my dad has the control to smoke once a month or once every few months and no a pack a day like he used to because he's learned to control himself.

the thing i find easiest, is everyone i know, knows that i smoke. my friends, my family, my boyfriend. and by not hiding it, i know i will have more support when i chose to quit because everyone will be behind me, helping me out.

julz, are you going to be at exton on friday?

I know not buying cigarettes would obviously lead to me no longer smoking, the point is that it isn't that difficult to drive 45 seconds to Wawa and get cigarettes and I was wondering if other people who have quit/are quitting have used/are using gum, patches, etc. or found something else to keep them busy/preoccupied. Obviously the knowledge itself isn't enough, as bad as that sounds, and I wasn't asking for someone to reiterate how unhealthy smoking is.

I love people that drive for 45 seconds. That's like me driving to my neighbor's house to ask for some sugar.

idk, the facts, along with what you can see it does to people would be enough to me. most of those truth commercials are pretty damn good. you need a substitute! you eed to not hang around with other people that smoke, and just like the post above me, if you want to quit, you will.

If my neighbor showed up at my house and asked for sugar id kick their ass. Cheap bastards

As for quitting, do what was said before, occupy that smoking hand of yours. The idea of jelly beans was sweet, i second that. Also, whatever smells like cigs (like your car) needs to be cleaned reallly good. im sure the smell of it wont help you either. My last car smelled like cigs when i got it, i just laid baking soda all over the carpet and seats and let it sit in there over night. vacuumed it out the next day it wasnt as bad.

How is it, you have something completly assholeish in a thread, and something actually decent, a few posts later?

And as for quitting, I have tried several times, but I am constantly surrounded by it (roommate, friends, family, and so on). One goal is to quit right after New Years.
