Thoughts on Canon 28-135mm

Looking at this lens to expand my arsenal a little bit. It is a Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Autofocus Lens. I found one brand new on eBay for $340 shipped from a powerseller with 100% feedback and am considering snagging it up.

Anyone have experience with this lens? A member recomended it to me, but I just wanted to get a few more voices in before I buy.

Not to sound demanding, but do you care to elaborate on that?

I think that is a stupid zoom range. I have a Nikkor 35-135mm. Just not wide enough. I should just get an 18-135mm and a 10-20mm to cover all bases nicely

Keep in mind I still have my 18-55mm and I can use that when needed. I eventually plan to get a 10-22 wide angle as well but thats a way away

expanding the zoom range for him will cost quite a bit more. the 28-135 IS has gotten great reviews from canon owners and i loved mine when i had it.

Had one and wasn't a big fan, seems soft at long and wide focal lengths and isn't wide enough for anything special, if you already have the 18-55 you don't need the 28-55 focal length from this soft lens. I would go with a 55-250 IS if that's the kind of price range you're in and it's a pretty sweet lens from what i've read.

over priced, over rated. Soft around the edges, slow at the longer focal lengths. Photography lenses you can't have your cake and eat it too. It's not possible to have that wide of a focal range without compromises.

decent lens, but i think its something you would get sick of pretty quick and want another upgrade. so maybe just wait a few extra weeks and pick up something that may last you longer before you would wanna get rid of.

i personally hate 28-whatever. i have a 28-80mm and just cant stand having it on my camera unless i need to use it, eventho its not that bad of a lens (nikon). it isnt the best focal length for a cropped sensor. if you are getting it to have a further zoom range, look into a 70-200 or 70-300. just my opinion.

Anyone have advice on either of these 2 and why i would go with one rather than the other?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...e_EF_28mm.html

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...e_EF_35mm.html

Both are in my budget, and I thought a wide angle was really neat when I used it, would definately be great for those times I like to do city scapes, architecture, or decide to take some fun car photos.

your 18-55 is plenty wide for now unless you want a 10-22. I vote for a zoom lens. 70-200 f/4 L is pretty cheap now

Maybe I should look to sell my XTi and get a different body?

28 or 35mm isn't very wide on a 1.6x crop body.

so true. 17 wasnt even wide enough for me, plus you have an 18-55 anyway.

yeah that one, and you don't really need a different body but if you want to sell it the 30d's are pretty cheap now

ha, no keep your body. you're not going to be gaining anything unless you go to a 5D and thats cash. i retract my previous statement and would recommend a used 70-200 f4L. only the non-IS version will be in your price range for now though, unless you are going to save for a while.

Well I shot with a non-IS at night and I saw that with a nice sturdy tripod, I didnt have a problem. I would assume during the day, I could keep the shutter speeds in a good range seeing as its got the f/4.

Ill research more on the lens, and see how much they are used.
