I'm not 100%, but I do not think that swap will work, nor would I think it be as cost effective as doing the reverse....using a 2.5 block with 2.0 heads. I'm assuming you have a 2.0 since you don't say so in your post.

I'm assuming you have a 2.0?
You can fit STi heads onto a 2.0 but I believe you'll need the sti intake manifold, wiring harness and avcs crap. Definitly not worth it. Get a nice set of cams and p&p the stock heads. |

I have STI cams in my 2.0 heads. You have to plug the holes in them for the AVCS which isn't hard. And while they flow a lot more up top they have the same duration as 2.0 cams. My suggestion is if you're going to do cams save up and get some 272's or something more worth while. |

there isnt a huge difference in the wrx heads vs. sti heads... it really wouldnt be cost effective to do either although it could be done with the right combo of parts... but it probably wouldnt show much gain.
if you're looking to do something that makes a big difference, get an sti shortblock in your car and reuse your wrx heads and everything else... that'll transform things.

of course another option would be to get an sti longblock and swap that in whole, adapting it to your stock wrx wiring. its a little subaru trickery but it is very possible
![]() even more power than the hybrid and it'll allow you to sell your wrx engine whole which will make it worth quite a bit more.

why dont you want to do the bottom end? you've got to pull the motor regardless whether you're doing top end or bottom end, and its a much more direct route to power to do the bottom end...
you could always pick up an sti longblock and just do both... its not THAT much more money to do than just the shortblock (or just the heads which is pretty uncommon)

you cant do the heads in an afternoon though... unless you know something i dont.
changing heads is much more involved on a boxer engine than it would be on an inline or even a V... its pretty much exactly the same work to do an assembled shortblock as it will be to do heads. you'll have to pull the intake manifold including fuel rails and wiring harness, and the motor will have to come out regardless if you're doing cams or heads. the only thing that would be less work is to do an STi longblock which could potentially be done in a day if you didnt run into any snags and had all the parts you needed ready to go.

yeah thats going to be a good route to go, except you can probably get it cheaper through our vendor here, M+J Modified... get in touch with them for any and all OEM Subaru parts.
keep in mind that you'll also need an engine gasket kit, and it also makes a lot of sense to replace your oil and water pumps and your timing belt.... this adds at least a few hundred to the cost, plus time and labor to assemble. its a great way to go and a lot of people do it, but all said and done i feel like it makes just as much sense to go with an STi longblock and skip all of the gasket, oil and water pump, timing belt, etc. and a lot of the labor on assembly. you could also sell your motor complete if you did that so it'd be worth a bit more. either way you cant go wrong though...
