Z06 vs. ZR1
I’ve got a subscription to Motor Trend and just finished flipping through the February ’08 issue. So I present the question - Z06 vs. ZR1.
Discuss…

It will all depend on the price...
I also read initially that the ZR1 would be almost 200 lbs lighter, then I read it was 'slightly' heavier, do we know for sure what the curb weight will be? **Just read the Motor Trend article, they say 200 lbs heavier and an extra weight bias to the front, boo!

“… 200 pounds more than a Z06 and to nudge the weight bias forward slightly to 52/48 front/rear.” – Motor Trend
MT is also estimating MSRP to be near $100,000. Most sources seem to be estimating the same. http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...zr1_first_look

Yeah, but I'll wait for hard numbers before I give my final opinion. To me, the question becomes Z06 + $25-30K in your pocket vs. a ZR1. I will say though, the LS3 and the LT4 package on the 2008 Corvette made me think hard about getting it over the SLK55, I can't wait to see how much people will be able to squeeze out of it supercharged.

It’s not the performance numbers per se however the marketing and value I wonder. They’re having similar questions on the Corvette boards. It will certainly be fast, know doubt, however GM has traditionally provided bang for buck… does the ZR1 fit the bill? The Z06 is almost perfect performance wise and pricing. It gets even better when I look online and am finding pre-owned Z06 (with under 10,000 miles) priced at 45,000 (C6 Z06s.) It wouldn’t take much to add a few accessories (for just a few grand) to get a bump in power.
Let’s say it’s priced at 85,000 (to compete with the Viper) what would that do to Z06 sales? Would Vette owners jump ship and pay just a little more over a new Z06? Or would it be better for GM to enhance the current Z06 with other options and price it accordingly? I think GM hit the mark when they dropped the Z06. But I wonder about the timing for the ZR1. Again, regardless, it will certainly be an azz kicker... no doubt.

The 09 (hopefully it will be the 2010) Corvette ZR1 will go perfectly in my friends old mans garage, where he has a 90 ZR1 and a 96 Grandsport, both with under 10 miles on the odometer. In the next bay over, the Ford GT and the GT500, both under 100 miles. How's that for marketing? He never even considered buying the Z06, but he will no doubt be one of the first on the list for the ZR1. THis isn't for the "tuner" market. This is a world class supercar, even more so than the C6 Z06, with rarity, uniqueness, and heritage. It's that simple. These cars won't have a problem selling at 100K, especially considering that the C4 ZR1's are still selling for close to 40k in good condition. Last edited by ITSTOCK; 12-29-2007 at 03:03 PM. |

Er - thanks for assuming I’m looking at this for the “tuner market.”
The reason I brought up the topic is not because of bias, however, similar topics were being discussed on other boards (and they in fact were Vette owners themselves with similar concerns.) There will no doubt be people ready to lay down a few bucks for this. As for your friends’ dad, if he’s got the green then go for it. The discussion I was curious about (which I didn’t necessarily make clear) can go somewhat beyond the “ZR1” name itself, and can include the company as a whole, producing and selling a $100K car in the U.S., the strength of the US dollar, etc. Note: We also could be way off on the pricing of this car which would change the conversation considerably. And you’re right – when I read this would be released for 09 I thought, “It seems like they’re rushing this thing.” Another year or so would be better to get everything right.

I never assumed that you were looking at this for the "tuner market", merely explaining who the car is marketed towards. If someone wants to buy a car and put a turbo or supercharger on it, or spend $25,000 on the car, this isn't the car that they are trying to sell to that market. That was what you were stating, and I was just explaining that it's not marketed towards the same group of people. My friends dad will be one of the first on the list, as he was for the 90 ZR1, and the 96 Grand Sport, the GT500 and the Ford GT.
The reason that I'm hoping it's released in 2010 is not because they are rushing it, but because it would be a 20 year commemorative ZR1. In 1990, the ZR1 was almost $60,000, and through 95 it sold right around 7,000 units. Quote:

i put this in a similar category to the GTR... why? you ask... its not in the same price range... right, its not. HOWEVER, its on a completely different level than any car ever made for production by the company making them.

A bunch of collectors will buy them and park them...what a shame. Me ...for actual driving...buy a zo6 and dump the savings into it and have a faster car.
