dude, think of it this way ok... if you held your cars engine at 3,000 RPM for a minute, thats 3000 revolutions per minute. Theres 60 seconds in a minute obviously, so divide 3000 by 60, and you get 50. So that happens 50 times a second... yes its slowed down

You got the right idea but not totally correct. The rpm's are for crank rotations per minute. Depending on how many cylinders you have it's much slower than 50 times per sec @ 3k rpms. If it were a one cylinder engine then it'd be 50 times per sec. But still a crap load of time you get a suck-bang-blow.

yep, that white mist looks a lot like gas & air, and then after the combustion phase, the exhaust valve (left one) surely would open

yes intake right exhaust left....gas and air come in, combust then leave through exhaust valve.

a very widely believed thought. It is actually a highly controlled burn. The only time you get an "explosion" in the cylinder, is when you have knock. Thats what causes knock.

awesome vid bro! but
wow i just lost some brain cells, is the vid slowed down? no keith its just idling at 4 rpm. intake on left? wow.....just...wow..... car enthusiasts? anyone on here one of those? jk take a joke.... anyone else think that ignition timing is a lil late...whats that runnin at? 5 degrees BTDC? that sucker practically ignitied AT TDC, whats that about? ray do u kno which engine this is from? is it runnin 83 octane or is it just at idle and theres no load?! |

Ignition timing kind of works the other way. Unless you are running really low octane like you said, 83. You normaly run less ignition timing under high load and more ignition timing under low load. Andy

yeah i agree, when 'em' = 'frank'. how about creating a positive and encouraging learning environment here buddy? we're not all master techs... everyone is at a different point in their automotive education.
and jc8889... i believe thats exactly what an explosion looks like... its an element(s) igniting extremely fast and expanding... which is what creates the incredible force outward. i think thats what any explosion would look like if it were slowed down a lot. very cool vid though... you can totally understand how it works and picture it in your head a million times but its not the same as seeing it actually happen.

Yep your exactly right. Basically, any explosion is the same, it's a massive heat transfer (heat = energy in most chemical reactions). Since its slowed down so much, you actually can see the energy transfer from the gaseous state of the fuel air mixture, into a fireball of energy being released in the combustion chamber. All in all, its pretty fukin cool to me.
