Hey guys,

My buddy's tranny in his '02 WRX just went...not sure of the exact details, but the shop he took it to said he needs to replace his whole tranny (they gave him an estimate of $3000). After hearing that, I told him that he should take his car to Area1320 or the likes. Any other opinions of shops in the area who do quality transmission work?

Tell'em to grab an 06 or an 07 sti trans...it's worth the extra $$$ if he can swing it.

Unfortunately he doesn't have any extra money since he is a college kid.

Take it down to Area1320, see if one of the guys down there has a line on a used trans.

Sounds like they are pricing out a brand new trans from subaru. I'm guessing they are just locating a used and gonna say it's new. I've just learned it's really not that hard to do a trans as long as you know what you're doing. Most likely he's going to need whatever gear he blew out which depending on what gear will cost 100-300 bucks. Have someone swap them out then put it back in. That's as long as he didn't damage anything else in there. If you guys take it out and put it in probably a couple hundred in parts and a few hundred for a place to swap out for the new gears then throw it back in. If you can't pull the trans yourself obviously it's going to cost a lot more. If it was 3rd gear there is an upgrade in the gear design and the sleeve.

If its only one gear it still will be a lot for labor.....like $$750-1000. Then what ever parts need replacing. If he is on his original trans, the sincros should be replaced like $250 last I heard for the parts. There are lots of routs he can go, nun of them are cheep. Id figure $1500 just for the trans to be fixed correctly or get a used one for less. IMO better to have it fixed so he knows its all good to go.

If he can get the cash together the best/low cost with reliability rout IMO would be to call Dillon at DS1motorsports.com and get their 1-2 and maybe 3rd gears that are forged and have Cody at Rallispec.com ( in south NJ ) rebuild the trans. When my stock 5th blew out in my PPG trans, DS1 quoted me $300 for a forged 5th ( I did not go with the forged 5th ) Rallispec charged me $1250 for install with all new sincros and a STi JDM 5th....while he was in there I had him Micro Hone all the PPG gears and shafts $250

Im thinking it may have been the few 125mph 4th to 5th gear changes I did at like +6500rpm .....shwing!.....yes occasionally I dont drive like a grand-pa
