68HTA or TD05-18G 8cm?

I'm planning on doing a hybrid build this summer and I'm stuck on what turbo to get. Mods will be:

- New EJ257 - stock pistons for now, new timing components, etc.
- EJ20 heads - decked, chamber matched, and tested.
- Various bolt ons and supporting mods - Intake, turbo inlet, exhaust mani porting, etc.
- I will not be using meth/alcohol at this point.

My main goals are fast spooling, low 300 whp for zipping around an autocross track next summer. I do like the price of the HTA, I'm just unsure of where it will actually satisfy what I'm looking for.

Thoughts?

The HTA afaik is a new style billet wheel, and a standard 20G is a 10+ year old design using old technology. Unless your 20G is an updated version using newer housings/wheels then there are better options out there now.
I dont know much about the 68HTA specifically or what its potential is, but a stock STi turbo can make 325+ whp pretty easily on a 2.5L motor so you're not going to have to work too hard for that power level. In fact a stock STi turbo would really be best for auto-x.

I couldn't be happier with my 68HTA. 340/365

While my mod list is pretty extensive to hit those numbers, the Baja weighs 3800-3900 with me in it AND has 245/45/18s with a final drive of 4.44

WRXs have 3.90 (I think) and weigh a LOT less.

Come out to the Applebees meet some night when you're in town and you can check it out.

The reason behind me not picking up a VF series turbo is that I haven't been able to come across a 34 that's in good shape and not outrageously expensive, or a 39 that's in good shape. That's why I was looking at the 68HTA, only $900 and supposed to put down 18G/20G numbers.

I didn't know you had the 68HTA! We'll actually have some similar engine modding, minus the fact that you have forged pistons, EJ255 heads and some other little things. Good to know.

Next time I'm home for the Applebee's meet (May 5th ) I'll stop over and check it out.

I would really look into putting in some pistons while its apart. You know for the future. ;) I dont think it would cost that much more.

yeah, yeah, yeah.....I KNOW. I just don't have the testicular fortitude when it comes to splitting the block. I'm completely fine with pulling the engine and swapping heads, I just don't wanna screw something up and be out a shortblock.

The good news is you don't have to split the block to drop pistons in. However I would still leave that to a professional to doublecheck your piston-wall clearance and make sure things are lubricated, assembled, and torqued properly all around. I would recommend this for either direction you take.

like Troll said, dropping in pistons is just that..dropping them in. But honestly tho? the TD04 is NASTY on a hybrid. That turbo and engine combo is awesome for autocross. Figure around 250whp and 350ftlbs... its a good time in a little package but will suck on the highway when doing pulls :/

A VF series will be helpful up top and I just so happen to have a 39 with 9k on it for sale

Port and polished TD04 on a hybrid. You'll be hitting boost at idle.

I've thought about going back to a stock turbo (VF43/39) on my car to be honest... (coming from a FP Green). Stock turbo tuned with a lot of supporting mods was the most fun I ever had in my car... 330 whp and 350 ft lbs and it hit EARLY!

Trust me, that is the one thing I do not trust myself to do. The only thing that is limiting me right now is cash money. I got a quote from IAG for dropping in the pistons and it was on the expensive side. Still haven't heard anything from precision tuning and some other shops.

I definitely do want the up top that the TD04 won't give me. But you have a PM about that there VF.

I knew someone was going to say it.

That's exactly what I want, early. The TD04 won't do it for me up top, and I'm still trying to decide if maybe a VF would.

More than likely, if I don't try out a VF, I'll be looking into the 68HTA a little more.

I'm not sure how much difference you'll see between that P&P VF that Ryan has & the 68HTA. I'd say, if you're on a tight budget go with his snail, I KNOW he wouldn't sell a pre-owned turbo to someone unless he'd be fine putting it on his own car.
If you go new, I'm pretty sure the 68HTA will make you & your wallet pretty damn happy too.

Good luck either way!

That's what I'm currently trying to figure out. I know there is a shop out there that has an online database of all their dyno plots that you can search. It lists the mods and everything, I just need to find it....

If you find it, remember that every car & every turbo are gonna be different.
I'd talk to Ryan about HIS opinion on which one will work best on your application.
True, he's selling one of the units in question, but if he thinks the 68HTA will be better for you he'll say so.

I was gonna use it to get a rough idea on what kinda power i might expect, but I'll talk to ryan too and see what he's got to say.

I would normally say the 68 but the fact that Rob has quicker gears makes it get up and go faster. For your request I would still do the VF.

btw you never asked me about doing pistons :P I'll be my left nut we are cheaper than anyone
