Why do I even bother...

I sometimes wonder why do I even bother.

I see another WRX, I do the wave.
Stupid....yes.
Geeky....yes, again.

At 4:00, I'm coming home from work. It's a bit warmer than usual, so I have the window down and the elbow is out cuttin through the breeze. And as I am on Heider Lane I see an 04 WRX rounding the bend.
As we get closer to passing, I stretch out the old arm and do the wave.

As I pass the kid and make eye contact, I have never seen a more dumbfounded look wash over someone face so rapidly.

So after that, two thoughts immediately race into my mind.

1. I can't believe he doesn't know about "the wave".
2. There goes another WRX destined for the scrapyard.

And for some of you who wonder why I am such an elitist some days...

I don't even know what NASIOC User ID I am, probably 70,000's. At first I liked that system because it eliminated some post whoring, but now I don't because it just makes people feel superior for having a lower number. I'm not saying you are, but that's my rant.

As for not waving, that's just not Subie style.

If you happen to see me on the road, I'll wave. I wave at just about every Impreza I see, even GC8s. I constantly get confused looks from guys who have no idea how tight the Subaru community is. Waving at clueless old guys driving WRXs is the best.

When I first got my DSM back in 90 the cars were still rare but just about all that I passed would wave. As they got more common the wave got less frequent. Now a days it is rare to get a wave from one. Most times they just rev at me at the stoplight, haha....

I am not familiar with the wrx wave. I have never done them. Usually when I am near other wrx's they just look down at my wheels or the body of the car, never look into my eyes lol. I try to give the head nod but never get eye contact lol. Maybe they are like wow that wrx is a piece of ****.

How to properly do the Subaru Wave.
Found on NASIOC.

SOFI 12.3-2 Subaru Owners Field Instruction

Section A - History of the wave
Proper waving is an integral part of customs and courtesies. The history of the subaru wave dates back to the middle-century when 360 owners would nod as a sign of recognition. With the mass production introduction of the WRX in 2001 and Sti in 2003 it has become a common courtesy to wave to another Subaru owner as a sign of mutual respect.

Section B - How to wave
There are various techniques of waving. They all however involve the usage of the hand. The most visually effective meathod of the wave while in the Continental US (Use the left hand if waving from a Non-US right sided vehicle) is to raise your right hand 20 degrees off the steering wheel and spread the tips of your fingers one inch apart. It is very important that you spread your fingers apart so as not to resemble the "heil hitler" salute. You also want to make sure you do not wave your hand from side to side - that denotes you have spotted a friend versus the Subaru wave.

Section C - When to wave
This is to be done when the other subaru is spotted within 8 car lengths in front of you or earlier depending on speed. This ensures the other driver has ample time to recognise the wave and return it. You are to hold the wave intil the wave is returned or the car has gone past. You then place your hand directly onto the steering wheel at a 45 degree angle.

Section D - Who to wave
You are required to wave at any impreza owner. Superior imprezas also require a slight downward head nod in addition to the wave. Although non-impreza owners are not aware of the subaru wave-salute (especially outback owners) you have the option to wave them at your own risk of being ignored.

Section E - Incorrect Signaling
The subaru wave is meant as a courtesy and respect under normal conditions of passing traffic who happen to have made the same wise investment you've made. You should not attempt to signal the other owner by:

Swirving your car back and forth to display the recognizable excellent handling
Waving with both hands
Shining your brights
Flashing hazard signals
Honking your horn
Attempting to yell out the window
Smiling a great big smile
Or lifting your chin up and whispering to yourself "sup"

You should not salute at night, whilst make a hard turn nor should you attempt to wave during an Auto-x event.

Preserve the wave and use it wisely. This is one of the things that distinguishes us from the rest of the punks. Besides having really large manhood and a love for the outdoors.

I wave to DSM's, subaru's, and most cars that look like they are cleanly modded. I used to do the Jeep wave but I have no jeep now so I would just look stupid. I never seem to get any waves. I did have soem kid in a avenger point and giggle becuase I have WRX badges on my RS if he only knew what he was giggleing at.

I have been known to flick my lights on and off as a wave in the winter(it's cold windows are up.)

I always wave to other WRX's, STi's, and 2.5RS's. I acually get a wave or a thumbs-up back about 70% of the time. I will even give or recieve waves from SRT's and Evos.

Tim does it count if I wave to SEPTA buses, tractor trailers, trains, and even airplanes. Not sure if the pilots on the planes wave back.
