general wheel paint removal question

I know this isn't necessarily your guys' cup of tea, but is there a way to remove spray paint off of factory painted/cleared wheels? I may have the opportunity to pick up a set of factory wheels for super cheap because someone spray painted them black. I don't have the money to get them powdercoated as these would most likely be "winter wheels". I just want them cleaned up a bit (if that's feasible).

But what if they encouraged it AND the stickers turn out to be awesome? They COULD POSSIBLY say something like "I love Mike and would turn gay for his tattooed, bmw driving, new york living ass". just saying.

Strip them without harming the original paint/finish? I live like 3 hours away, that's why I was looking for tips.

Oh dont know about that lol. What size wheels are they? You might be better off just having him coat them a different color. It wouldn't be too much and you wouldn't have the headache of trying to keep the original paint

Most newer wheels are factory powder coated. Older wheels are painted instead of powdercoated, which is easier to remove. From my experience, a decent stripper will take spraypaint off like it's nothing, however it can eat up the powdercoated clearcoat underneath in the process.

Also, if the guy did any kind of prep work, the surface underneath that spraypaint is probably scuffed up. Then again, crappy wheel paint jobs generally lack decent prep work...

That said I would either:

(in order of tediousness)
A.) Leave them alone.
B. ) Sand them down to the factory paint/powder, prep that, and repaint.
C. ) Strip them completely, then paint.

both guys hit it pretty much on the head. In other words there would be no way to get the spray paint off the wheels without stripping the factory coating off. we can strip them to bear metal and you can pick a new color for an affordable price then you have fresh winter wheels

Well, if that's the case, then I may pick them up and have the refinished and coated and use them as summer wheels. I guess it depends on what I price I can buy them for.

Thanks for the info...all 3 of you.
